My House Smells

I’ve had an intact Tom living in my house for 2 days now and the stench is terrible. He’s not even spraying but his litter trays smell awful even after emptying.
Is it normal for boy cats to smell so much? He does wee a lot and it smells like really strong body odour Envy
He was a local stray and will be staying in until an abscess heals. I was planning on keeping him in until I can get him booked in to be neutered but I’m not sure I can cope with the smell for that long! Can’t even open the door or windows for fresh air because he’ll escape. Any tips other than a peg for my nose?

Ah that's tough but also lovely you took him in. I have had male cats but kittens neutered at 6 months. Can you call the vet for advice? Also we need pictures.

Here he is. He’s massive in real life. My cat is completely in love with him I just hope he feels the same way once he has his bits off Grin

Biokat litter is amazing. I buy from Amazon. It really helps with odour.
I also recommend Neutradol gel globes. I have one in the same room as my litter and my house never smells of cats, even before my boys were done.

Hes lovely. When can you get him done?

cupsofcoffee · 25/06/2021 07:19

Does neutering need to wait until the abscess heals or something?

I would be ringing the vet this morning and booking him in to be done - I got our kitten booked in and he was neutered and back home three days later!

Not everywhere has huge waiting lists so I would get him done ASAP.

TofuCat · 25/06/2021 09:56

Vets won’t give him the snip until the abscess heals. It’s quite a bad one unfortunately but it is looking better thankfully.
Can’t afford any posh litter as he wees a lot and I’m doing full litter changes every time to try and keep on top of the smell. Bob Martin litter freshener seems to help and I don’t normally rate Bob Martin products.
He’s just been wormed and this seems to have given him a bit of a dodgy tummy so the smell situation is getting worse Sad

You don't need to spend a fortune on cat litter, honestly.

Try "Cat's Best" litter from ZooPlus. It seems pricy but you barely ever need to change it - it clumps together so you just scoop the poo and pick out the clumps. I use tray liners too so the smell never gets the chance to "sink in" to the trays - when they do get fully changed (maybe every two weeks) I just put the liner in a bin bag, put a fresh one in and refill the trays.

A 10l bag is only £7.99 and lasts us 3-4 weeks, and we have three indoor cats and four trays :)

AlfonsoTheMango · 25/06/2021 13:47

OP, if you're in London you can have two large bags of litter that I no longer need.

TofuCat · 27/06/2021 19:02

Thanks @AlfonsoTheMango that’s a really kind offer but I’m too far away.
I’m actually growing concerned about how much he does wee. In the last 6 hours he’s gone 5 times. I don’t know if he’s marking or if somethings wrong.
The abscess is healing well so I’ll be making an appointment for neutering soon but i think I’ll be making a health check appointment first Sad

Unneutered tom cats smell appalling. No amount of special litter or anything else will make a difference. They reek. The smell starts to go around 3 days after neutering and should be fully gone in two weeks.
