Previous resident cat - what to do with her?

We recently purchased a house from a chap who had a beautiful cat. He’s moved within the local area and we’ve noticed the cat has been in and around the garden in the last few days. Last night and today the cat had been sat on the window or at the front door meowing to come in. What do we do? I popped outside to get something from my car and it tried to dart by my legs to get into the house. It’s been out side the door for the last hour now.

We’ve not moved in fully yet and when we do, our three dogs will come joining us. They are not cat friendly as they’ve never lived with cats. I’m really concerned that the cat could find it’s way in via an open window or something.

What should we or the owner do if anything? This has only happened in the last few days so I think the owner has tried to keep the cat in for a good month or so. Thanks

Call the owner to come and get her? If it was my cat I'd be there like a shot!

I'd also tell him about the imminent arrival of your dogs, and that they aren't cat friendly.

Cats are smart. It will see/hear the dogs and you will never see it again.

Do you have a contact number/address for the seller? If no I'd drop a note saying you've seen the cat round the door and just wanted to let them know incase it's gone missing

HelpMeh · 11/06/2021 23:10

Seller should've kept cat indoors for 2 weeks so that it knows where its new home is.

I would try to find out if this happened.

Poor kitty is probably confused or potentially lost so I'd definitely contact the owner.

Call the owner.

When your dogs are there the cat will decide it prefers its new home, I expect.

The OP says clearly that this has only recently started happening and it’s therefore likely the cat has been kept indoors for a month or so.

This happened with my next door neighbours, their cat kept coming back as they hadn’t moved far away. Eventually they denied it was their cat! As cats protection were full my neighbours on the other side took her in as I already have 3 cats.

Wideawakeandconfused · 11/06/2021 23:23

I’ve contacted him but had no reply. Because we’ve not moved in yet I don’t know how often it has been happening. We were last here 2 weeks ago and no sign of it then.

Will it just eventually get the message and stop coming over?

It may not know how to get to its new house, so I would persevere with contacting the old owner if you can. Poor thing.

Faranth · 12/06/2021 07:38

Not necessarily, I took a cat to the vets to be scanned as it had been hanging round my workplace for weeks, obviously hungry and not going home. Turned out it had been missing from a couple of roads over after a house move for 7 months.

I expect the arrival of your dogs will solve the problem.
