Our girl being PTS today

Just wanting a handhold really. My 16 year old girl is being PTS later today.

Around 9 months ago she lost some weight and had tummy issues and the vets said that she had pancreatitis and gave some things to help. They said that they could check for diabetes etc but we decided not to since they said that she was otherwise healthy and we didn't want to poke and prod her because of her age.

Over the last week she has lost so much weight from her back end, I can see her hips, spine and ribs sticking out. Over the past couple of days she has been lay in different places, mostly awake instead of asleep. She has also been messing herself when going to the tray and has needed cleaning up, something that she hasn't growled at me for (unusual for her).

Obviously we have made the decision to have her PTS but I don't know what i'll do without her. She has been with me since I was 11 years old and has always been there with me. Even now if I give her a stroke she will start purring, she is just so full of love.

I’m so sorry, it’s an awful thing to go through & so painful.

Will someone drive you home?.

Chickydoo · 02/06/2021 15:47

Oh that is sad, I have been there, it's a really difficult decision. You are doing the kindest thing though.

I have another elderly cat too and I suspect it won't be long.
This is the hardest yet most important thing you can do.
Take care of yourself 💐

@Fluffycloudland77

Thank you.

Yes, my DP is finishing work early so he can take us.

Oh my love, we went through this 5 months ago with our 16 year old lovely girl. I'm not going to lie to you, it's heartbreaking, even when you know you're acting on feelings of care and love for your very poorly cat. Flowers

TheLongRider · 02/06/2021 15:53

Flowers You're doing the right thing for her to matter how much your heart breaks. We had to do it for our old girl a few years ago.

Aprilwasverywet · 02/06/2021 15:54

We lost our boy last year. Fast weight loss. Vet said he would be dead before tests would be back.. Bloody Covid...
He was only 8.
Sorry you are going through this.

FaceAcher · 02/06/2021 15:54

Huge love to you.

I'm so sorry you have to do this.

We had to do the same for our beautiful girl of the same age last summer.

It was the saddest time. And I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

But once they're not suffering anymore there is a sense of relief. Knowing it's coming and watching them deteriorate is just horrendous. They don't deserve that.

Thank you for loving her for so long. And for not letting her suffer even though it hurts you so much to say goodbye.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/06/2021 16:42

So sorry. But it sounds like the right decision. Hand hold.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 02/06/2021 16:45

OMG I'm so sorry OP, i had to have my 20 year old lovely girl PTS a couple of months ago I'm still crying every evening.
It's so so hard and so unfair they go so soon.
You're doing the best thing for her and you can't do more than that. If she could she'd thank you Flowers

soberfabulous · 02/06/2021 17:06

Oh OP I'm so sorry to hear this.

I had our lovely 20 year old girl PTS last Saturday morning .

She too had pancreatitis and had lost a lot of weight in just a few months.

The vet came to the house. I held her for the sedative injection and then we laid her on a footstool in the lounge for the IV that stopped her heart.

I was next to her ears whispering that I loved her the whole time. I sat with her body for the whole day and we buried her in the garden. It was excruciating and I've cried on and off all week.

I would say by day 9 it got a little better.

She had a lovely long life and it sounds like your lovely girl did too.

It's so painful. I send you love.

Im so sorry..its heart rending I know.

StartingGrid · 02/06/2021 18:17

So very sorry... we lost our lovely 20 year old last year, it's the ultimate kindness you can show them. Wishing your lovely girl a peaceful passing Flowers

AmandaHugenkiss · 02/06/2021 18:24

I’m so sorry. We made the decision to put our old boy to sleep, and he took the decision out of our hands the day before the appointment. You are doing the right thing by her but it’s still dreadfully upsetting Flowers

crazycatgal · 02/06/2021 21:13

Thank you so much for all of your kind messages.

She's gone now. The vet said that it was the right thing to do. It was hard but I was glad to know that I was doing the right thing.

We bought a stone dcat planter from The Range and put some of dcat's ashes inside with a lovely yellow daisy plant on top.
Pride of place in our garden. We speak to him every day.
Makes us smile...

SpindleWhorl · 02/06/2021 21:21

So sorry, @crazycatgal. It's awful, I know.
