In a couple of months we are moving just down the road.

Worried my boy is going to try to return to his old home.

Are there any tried and tested methods we can use.

I was thinking about putting him in a cattery for 2 weeks, and then keeping him indoors for 2 weeks to make a total of 4 and hope that breaks him 'homing beacon'

Any ideas from anyone? Is this overkill or will this be alright.

We moved down the road a few years back and kept ours in for 10 days after. That seemed to work fine.

When my mum moved it was literally the next street, kept the cat in for 6 weeks, then let him out, he went straight to the old house, mum had to warn the new occupant that the cat used to live there and after a couple weeks or so the cat stopped going there

We moved a few roads away. On moving day we borrowed a really big dog cage and put the cat in it in the garden of the new house while we moved stuff in.

It kept him safe while we were in and out, and also got him used to his new surroundings. I think we kept him in for a couple of weeks after that, and he's been fine.

When we did similar (from a rental flat to one we bought in the next block down) we just kept our cat in for the usual two weeks and she coped with the move just fine. Our former landlord of our old flat replaced the door with a cat flap with a new door without a flap after we moved out, though, which probably helped Smile

We did similar a couple of years back, and 2 weeks indoors did the trick.

We moved in the middle of a heatwave so spent a lot of time in the garden and have some brilliant pictures of shouting, sulking cats looking out the window.
