best flea treatment?

New cat and I don't think she has fleas; however my DSis, experienced cat owner, says I need to use a preventative treatment. Which ones are good and how often do I need to use?

I use Bravecto on my cat. It’s a small amount of solution on the back of the neck. Lasts 3 months. No fleas.

Thanks @DobbyTheHouseElk, I've had a look online, it seems you need a prescription from the vet for it, is that right?

I get stronghold plus from the vet. Over the counter ones aren't very reliable

pasinphoebe · 28/05/2021 21:45

Really you need the vet prescribed ones.
So not the frontline you can just buy but the frontline vets prescribe.
We were told recently by our vet that they are seeing fleas becoming more resilient to some brands. We use advocate or advantage.
Great that you are being proactive, flea infestation is not what your cat (or your house!) needs.

We use advocate, once a month. Costs ££££ but it does work (because they inevitably get fleas when we scrimp on it).

Get a flea comb too - this is strangely satisfying if you do catch any.

Yes to Bravecto, both for ticks and fleas. It's on prescription.

Yea you definitely need to get prescription flea treatment. I did hear from the CPL that the over the counter ones have 0% active ingredients. My MIL only used Bob Martin unless crap, and her cat died of a flea infestation. Poor thing had hardly any blood left. Please use the vets. They don’t charge for a consultation for repeat prescriptions.

Definitely Veterinary prescribed ones... bravecto is the best and it last 3 months

We had over the counter Frontline to start - lots of fleas and some nasty infections from scratching. Followed by over the counter Advocate - fewer fleas but still some. Now on Bravecto from the vet which works well - it’s not massively more expensive so learn from my mistakes and start there!
