My dog is eating cat shit

My dog has started (2days in a row now) to get cat shit out of the litter box when I am out.

It is vile.

How can I stop this.

I can't realistically block off the litter tray.

Can anyone help me? It's knocking me sick.

It's only when we are out and by our he's left for an hour max.

He has a kong toy. He has treats when we leave. The king toy is one where you add paste or peanut butter to so he does have that.

Can anyone help me please

It saves you a job clearing out the tray! Hilarious thread thank you i needed cheering up Grin

Our old dog used to do this, so disgusting but then I've always thought dogs are stinky and gross. Not my pet of choice at all. Cats are far more refined. Grin

It’s a long story, but we needed to have a litter tray that only one pet could reach. We bought a good sized cabinet and cut a microchip sensing cat door into the side. We keep the litter inside. We can easily access the litter by opening the doors to the cabinet. The cat who needs access to the box is the only one whose microchip is programmed for access.

It would also work with the kind that works with a collar lock and if your dog is large enough you can actually buy cabinets for housing litter trays with precut holes. I remember seeing a cute one that had the hole cut in the shape of a cat’s head.

I have a cat who will eat it's own vomit so I'm not sure they're all that refined Grin

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow

yeah, they just regard it as an all you can eat buffet...cat poo and crunchy litter...like Ferrero Rocher

Some dogs are more honourable about it than others...all the labs and retrievers we have had simply cannot wait, like a signal you know that cat has used the tray before you hear the digging cos the dog is meerkatting!

The GSDs we have had have all been less alert to the actual doing, but passing a tray with a poo they would probably not leave it there.
Current GSD prefers his from the garden, so i know the second he goes out and makes a beeline for the clematis that the cat has left us a message

Haha, Ferraro rocher is EXACTLY what I think of when my dog eats the cat's poo! Looks pretty much identical.

I was disgusted when I first noticed, but dramatically lowered my standards and now appreciate the (only) help with chores! Saves me a job and treats the dog - win win!

My doggo also LOVES horse manure, goes crazy for it.

Embrace the feral OP.

I am going to have to get a baby gate I think am fence it off somehow.

My living room and kitchen are open plan. The bathroom is downstairs down a small couldn't even call it a corridor type of thing. I will have to get some sort of baby gate the cats can get over but not the dog.

Don't most dogs eat poop? My neighbours dogs both eat each others.

SoupDragon · 29/05/2021 15:24

Saves you cleaning out the tray. My dog used to enthusiastically clear up cat sick when we had our previous cat # utterly disgusting but oh so useful.

Our litter tray is in the utility room and there's a cat flap on the door to the kitchen. Dog can't get there.

My cats go under the gate but I so want a cat who does this...

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 29/05/2021 15:27

We got a cat flap and put it in the cellar but the dog can fit through the cat flap so we ended up putting the enclosed litter tray on a table.

The single worst smell of my life was when dog ate the contents of the littler tray and threw it up all over the house.
I am retching a little just typing this...

Can't you just swap around what's on the shelves, and put a top entry litter box on the top shelf?

Branleuse · 30/05/2021 00:13

Any dog that has free access to a cat litter tray will do this. Then they go and roll in fox shit sometimes too like its the best thing ever.

Furries · 30/05/2021 00:44

@queenofthenorthwest - you can get gates with a cat door (I’ve got one). Sample photo attached. Just google cat and dog gate, should bring up loads of options.

My dog can jump the baby gate Wink

Make sure you get an extra, extra tall one.

Or just put the litter tray on the top shelf?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 30/05/2021 07:19

My dog treats the cat litter tray like a sweet shop. We ended up putting a cat flap on the utility room door where the litter tray lives. It looks a little wierd but does the trick!

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 30/05/2021 07:26

We had to put a gate between the dog and the tray. Thankfully the cat rarely uses it now. We only keep a litter tray because we keep her in at night and she will use it when the weather is bad.
I’m impressed you can keep food at dog height too. My dog would eat here, the cats and the cat poop if she could access them like that.

queenofthenorthwest · 31/05/2021 18:21

He is too small to get up there @LooksBetterWithAFaceMask

queenofthenorthwest · 31/05/2021 18:22

@Furries he would fit through that he is a chihuahua cross Jack Russell

@violetbunny

I will try this I'm just worried the cats won't want to go in because the Will have to head it the tray flap on the way in.

I will have to try it.

Then the baby gate or fencing it off somehow.

CovidCorvid · 31/05/2021 18:26

@StormcloakNord

My two do this.

I've learned to just... let it happen.

I live in blissful ignorance that they are nice normal dogs who don't eat cat shit.

🤢

Same. I also pretend not to notice when the cat vomits on the floor and the dog eats it.
Furries · 31/05/2021 19:22

@queenofthenorthwest - ah, that would obviosly be a problem then 😂. I’m so used to having a giant breed, I didn’t think about the smaller ones!
