Cats hate each other after getting spayed

I have 2 cats who are 7 months old and they were both spayed on Monday. Before that, they were obsessed with each other, they would cuddle up to sleep, share food, perfect little cats.

Now they cannot bear to be in the same room together, the hiss and growl (do cats growl ?) at each other and just seem to hate each other. I don’t think it’s helping that they are wearing the wee bodysuits to protect their wounds.

Does anyone have any advice ? They are still loving with the humans....just not each other 😭

Thanks

Give it time ,they are probably still in pain and uncomfortable.

dementedpixie · 26/05/2021 13:45

They will still smell funny, they look funny and they maybe still have residual pain. They should improve over the next few days

And they don't smell 'right' to each other. Go back to basics, keep them apart while they are healing and scent swap. If you have a Feliway use that as it might help keep them calm. I'm sure they will be fine again in a few days.

Yes cats absolutely growl and it can be scary if you are not used to it

Give it time they are in pain and they smell of the vets not of each other

It's totally normal for cats to be "off" with each other post-surgery or even post-vet visits.

They'll both still be a bit tender and sore - plus they'll smell funny, look funny (shaved spots, body suits) and potentially groggy and tired too. Just give it time, they'll come round :)

I have a feliway plugged in to help them, they’re back at the vets on Friday so hopefully he’ll give the go ahead to take the bodysuits off. I’m not forcing anything with them, these girls are my first cats and I just wanted to make sure I’m doing everything I can for them.

Thanks for your help 🙂

They give them something like ketamine to bring them round from the anaesthetic so they're really not themselves for a couple of days. My kittens went a bit loopy!
They're nearly 2 now and still besties but do play fight and occasionally get grumpy with each other - one of them is a real growler when annoyed 😂

My one cat acted like he was drunk after being castrated he was hilarious his brothers (bought separately so they were castrated earlier) were following him around like WTF? POLL? WHAT DOING? the following day he was hung over looking for sympathy

MilduraS · 26/05/2021 18:08

My older cat hissed and growled when we got the second cat home after she was spayed. The poor thing was feeling really sorry for herself and just laying down staring into space while the other one was going off on one. It took about a week for the older cat to get over it/ the younger cat to stop smelling funny.

They’re back to normal lying cuddling each other thank god !

Thanks everyone.

Excellent update OP. Glad all's back to normal.

Sending huge sympathy. My cats are supposed to be clever, but are a nightmare if one of them goes to the vets! I think I posted on here after they were spayed/neutered. They were as high as kites and bruising for a fight.

It really took us by surprise ( we're on our 4th pair of sibling cats).

I have 2 cats and they are crazy for each other so one is named bucea and one is named Kitty and they are daughter and mother they’ve been into so many cat fights that kitty has a bloody scratch on her nose they’ve been spayed and before they’ve been spayed they’ve been so great with each other. I don’t know what happened but they hate each other. They won’t even be together for a second. They hide from each other all day long kitty hides in a curtain. And they attack each other when they see each other by us. and it sounds crazy when it happens, they start growling, scratching hitting jumping. and today.bucea caught a fly and ate it. since kitty hides in the curtain all day, I just put a little bed for her to lay in and a bowl of water and bucea bites us when we come closer to her and they barely drink water so yeah, if there are any recommendations, please reply because I think we have to separate them for good it’s been a month since they’ve been spayed please reply if there are any recommendations🙂
