Cats shitting with abandon

Can anyone suggest ways to encourage cats to shit in one particular place in the garden? Our two cats have an indoor litter tray but rarely use it, instead they crap literally everywhere all over our back garden (our cats don’t go out the front because of the road but that’s ok, the neighbour’s cat craps in our front garden 😐). I thought cats were clean animals but ours don’t even bother burying their shit! I don’t want my toddler encountering cat turds every time he plays in the garden, it’s disgusting and such a health risk. Is there any way if I put litter or sand down in one corner they could be convinced to just go there, or is it a lost cause? Do I need to scoop the poop every day as I would for a dog? What do other cat owners do?

I find keeping an area or two of soil loosely hoed (known as poo corner) works with ours. Worked for our previous cat too.

Woodchip encouraged my cats to go in my garden in one area. Unfortunately it also encouraged other cats too Angry

Sorry, should be clearer. Bark chippings. About £7 for a massive bag in any garden centre, the range, supermarkets etc
