How much is your cat’s insurance?

I’ve just got the renewal quote through from my cat’s insurance and it’s going up from £29 to £40 a month.

She’s twelve years old and has no illnesses except some dental work and a funny turn many years ago that she fully bounced back from after 24hrs (vets never got to the bottom of what it was).

We’re struggling for money at the moment so £40 a month feels so huge to me right now. But maybe it’s a completely average amount?

Also she is a house cat with no underlying health issues so that is also a reason its cheap

Honestly £50 a month is a good deal for a cat that age. If she develops any of the common medical conditions associated with ageing in cats like hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, osteoarthritis etc (and it'd be a rare cat that didn't) the medication alone would likely be double that then you'd have regular checks/blood tests etc which can really mount up.

My car has thyroid issues. It cost a couple of hundred to get diagnosed.

The medication would be £75 a month from vets but I paid £18 for a prescription for 6 months and then a 3 month supply is £45 ordering onlineSo £18 a month all in and then a single blood test 6 monthly. I suspect if I had insurance they would simply hike the price by about that £18 a month anyway!

My cat insurance started at a fiver and rose to £86 a month when she was 14.

I was told when she was 12 or 13 and she’d had £1500 of vet hospital diagnoses and treatment for a uti and kidney disease that I could increase the excess at renewal to bring the monthly cost down, after its annual hike, which I did. But when I tried to do that again later they wouldn’t let me.

The insurance was Tesco and the cover was £20k or something.

It gets expensive as they get older.

I stopped insuring her and she only cost me £300 incl meds from when she was 14 until 17 so three years. If I’d paid the insurance I’d have paid £86x12monthsx3 years. So I was lucky I left at the right time and she remained healthy for her age.

Nearly £50 a month. Pet plan. 13 year old cat. It's extortionate but I'm too scared to stop it at this point! He does have a few bowel issues but we haven't made a claim in years. Next time I get a pet I will put £50 in an account each month and just buy minimal insurance to cover legal if needed (for a dog for example).

£30 per month. 16 year old Persian. I've resented paying it for years as he appeared to be the healthiest cat in the world.

Last week he stopped eating and being sick - 5 days in hospital on a drip, scan and lifelong medication has cost £4K so far!!

Now I'm happy I paid that £30 per month!

£125 a month for my two indoor Persians. And will probably double next year. My first two ran up vets bills of £22k. So i can't complain to much.

Believe in insurance, but mine is now becoming unaffordable. So I suspect I will have to self insure the expensive one

Petplan, top level cover for my 14yo cat approx £38 per month. Bought by many for my 6 other cats, all 8yo or under, top level cover, £90 per month for all 6.

I cancelled my 17 year old cats insurance when he turned 13, they wanted £78 a month for him. I have put away £25 a month for him since, from age 13 to 16 he only ever needed his annual visit. Earlier this year we thought we’d have to have him put to sleep but spent £400 at the vets and he’s ok (ish) now. So we are still £££ up from not paying for insurance.

3 out of my 6 pets are insured, the rest aren’t and again over 10, if we do have any major issues I have a credit card with a 10k limit on it and can use that.
