This is a consistent problem. My partners family own a dog and a cat. They always set out to get the dog and the cat ended up finding it's way to them. They have always clearly favoured the dog. It's their "fur baby". Okay fine. But what doesnt sit right with me is this cat has always come second best which to me is board line negligent. The cat has been quite poorly and needed multiple times to go to the vet. They refuse to take her, they always say oh she is fine just stressed ect or say they can never afford to but then always somehow find money to take the dog to the groomers and pay out ridiculous amounts on him. The latest is again the cat is unwell. Upon insistence I managed to get them to take the cat to the vet, they said the cat needs further testing. The cat is weeing and defecating around the house, losing weight and acting weird. I'm worried she is going downhill. But apparently because the cat is "eating" it's okay. Its frustrating as I know cats can mask illnesses and just because she is eating doesnt mean she is fine. But for some reason they wont take her. It's become so infuriating for me to see. I am constantly having ago at my partner about his family and this cat. It's getting to the point now where I know I need to take a seat back because its affecting my relationship with dp and his family. But I'm worried that If I dont do anything this cat will waste away, what do i do?

Cats will often as you say still eat. But this change of behavior sounds concerning and it needs to be seen. Cats mask their pain very well, can you just go over, take the cat and pop it to the vets?

I'm afraid there's not much you can do about the owners.. Its a hard situation for you as the cat must be in a lot of pain

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/05/2021 15:40

Offer to take it on as a pet?.

Leaveitinthepast · 10/05/2021 15:50

@Fluffycloudland77 I have tried. They wont let me. They say it's not my cat/problem

Honestly I'd go round, get the cat and take it to a vet myself. .poor thing.

Leaveitinthepast · 10/05/2021 15:56

@Horehound I really cant afford xrays/blood tests. The cat is insured. All the owners have to do is take her!!

Gosh that is so infuriating. So what do they say if you ask why it's going to the toilet all over the house? Don't they care about that?!

Call the RSPCA and report it. Their role is to care for neglected pets & animals. They adore their dog, but neglect their cat. Do they seriously not see the contradiction.

How old is the cat?
So weird to have insurance but not use it.

Leaveitinthepast · 11/05/2021 15:27

@Horehound they put it down to stress

How strange that they have insurance and won’t use it. Maybe they don’t actually have insurance? I’m not sure what you can do other than take the cat and find a way of paying.
They sound like crap owners.

My sweet Tigger hid pain too well. By the time she showed us she was ill, she deteriorated so fast the vet said further testing would finish her off. She was eating til the day before she slipped away.

I wish she had shown us sooner. Still miss her. Ack just posting about her is going to send me into a spiral.

Please report them for cruelty and neglect.
