Apparently Havelock needs to loose weight!

Just been to the vets for Havelock’s booster jab. Not our usual vet, but our normal practice, they took Havelock in while I waited outside.
When he brought him back outside the vet said “Well, he’s 5.9kg, so he’s a bit on the larger side. I’d like it if he was nearer to 5kg.”
I said “Well an average weight for a male Ragdoll is 5 to 9kg, so he’s at the lower end of the range for an adult Ragdoll surely?” (He’s 2).
Vet then says “No, he’s a touch on the heavy side, I’d prefer him to drop 1kg!”
I’m really quite pissed off on Havelock’s behalf.
Obligatory pictures so you can judge for yourselves

Has he got a lot of excess flesh? My Persian was very heavy but it was flubber, the Bengal weighed more but was muscly.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 05/05/2021 20:03

No, there’s no excess on him at all, he’s not a greedy cat, he has about 5 dreamies a day and 6 or 7 small pieces of dried duck. He has a dry food down all the time, but he doesn’t eat wet food at all, once a week he has a bit of chicken mashed with likeliks.
He’s a big ball of floof, but when he’s wet he’s a fraction of himself Grin.

I wouldn’t worry if it’s muscle. A big rag dolls going to weigh more than a normal cat.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/05/2021 20:24

I was told Magic was obese. She's 4.5kg. She's just got a very cobby body.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/05/2021 20:25

Magic when she's wet!

Next time he's wet, look at the body condition chart for cats and see where he lands on it.

If he's got wet food down all the time he may be eating more than you realise- the recommended kibble portions are surprisingly small, and don't include dreamies and duck.

Puntastic · 05/05/2021 20:29

*Sorry, should read if he's got dry food down all the time.

lljkk · 05/05/2021 20:30

How flabby is the tum?

Can I live with you? Also my dog would like to.

This is it.

So, he’s definitely fitting into the ideal size range, (thank you @Puntastic) he’s got a defined waist and you can feel his ribs, spine and clavicle. His tummy feels soft but isn’t flabby or fat.
@MrsTerryPratchett I feel you’d fit right in hereGrin
I’ve calmed down a bit now, Havelock is lying across the bottom of my legs, and believe me I can feel his bonesGrin
I’m having trouble posting pictures and keep typing responses that just won’t post when I try to attach photos.

I feel I would too. No need to bring any reading materials I'm assuming. Grin

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 06/05/2021 23:01

Good lord noGrin
We even have the full collection on Audible, for those days when a book is just too heavy.

Op he's a magnificent looking beast!
Toddlertea I'm sorry to say this but your cat looks like s/he is plotting its revenge on being washed.... I'd be very afraid if I were youShockGrin

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/05/2021 03:38

I feel like your house is the AirBnB I need. Snacks, Terry Pratchett books, even listeny if I'm tired.

You don't have a beach, hammock and run do you?

And your cat is purrrfect. I'll get my coat.

HarrietYeti · 07/05/2021 03:58

He needs to do more crosswords. The fretting about being bested could shed some lbs.

Personally I think he looks perfectly magnificent (as the bearer of such a name should be).

chatw00 · 07/05/2021 05:42

I have no cat related expertise to offer but wanted to say that Havelock is very handsome. But I suspect other people have already told you (or him) that before Grin.

samlh · 07/05/2021 12:08

He is magnificent and doesn't look overweight at all.

Such a handsome boy!
