Finding it difficult to get a cat from a rescue centre, should we buy instead?

I've been looking to adopt a cat from a rescue for a while now but not having any luck.
Our closest rescue won't even entertain the idea as we don't have a cat flap. There are a couple of others around but any they advertise are reserved almost immediately.
I've registered with one and they keep our details for a while to see if we match with any they get in. But not heard anything yet.
I never thought it would be this difficult. We're an all adult household with no other pets.
So I'm considering buying a kitten instead but I'm very wary of encouraging breeding.
Is there anything in particular we should look out for? I don't think we'd be able to visit the home now with COVID so it may be hard to know the set up.

We had a cat flap at last house....we now have a little window that is always open for cats to come in/ go out. Summer and winter.
Had it for 3 years, all fine. Fitting a cat flap would not be straightforward in our property.

We don’t have a cat flap, I just leave the patio doors a little open or, if bad weather, they stay in! They have a lovely life without a cat flap with four adults competing to play with them. I don’t understand these shelters sometimes.

Hello!

Bit late to the thread but hope you don't mind my following, OP. We lost our 18 year old rescue in March and are desperate for another two moggies (we got her from Cats Protection with her brother as kittens although he wandered off around 10 years ago).

I am now looking to buy two kittens as I just cannot get any responses from shelters. Most won't consider us for older cats as we have primary school age DC and won't even take enquiries for kittens as wait lists are so long. Having looked at the insane prices people are asking, I wonder if the numbers of kittens are lower as people have realised they can sell this year.

Depressing and I don't want to fuel it but at the same time, I have always had cats bar a brief period working abroad and it just doesn't feel like home without one.

We adopted from Cats Protection last time
and found them really proscriptive with what they wanted. I have heard anecdotally that RSPCA are a bit more pragmatic, but that could be due to specific volunteers locally.

We were lucky to have a pregnant cat decide to move in with us in 2019 and we now have 6 cats with no cat flap.
I am a stay at home mum though and my husband works from home. It's a full time job letting cats in and out 🤣
If I leave the kitchen window open though, they use that and they stay in at night.

Omg 6.
Although I once had 9...
I'm fine with my 3 now, and will be sticking with them.
If I had a bigger house and more money I'd definitely had more though.

I misread this and thought it was your recommended way of acquiring a cat.

Mind you, tin of tuna on the floor, door slightly open... it shouldn't take long.

Unkindly the only cat in the vicinity is my friend/neighbour’s cat and I’m always trying to entice him in with food.. much to the disgust of my male cat!🤣

Just heard from cats protection that we can adopt a cat I applied for! And no cat flap needed.
We're very excited.
A gorgeous little 9 month old black female.
We can get her in a few days so we're now trying to think of names for her as we're not keen on what the rescue are calling her.
And we need to go shopping for lots of cat things!

Oh that's fabulous, I have a little black cat named Jemima, she's currently asleep on my pillow and loves to watch jewellery selling shopping channels, fuzzy weirdo Grin

Just found this Snozzle maid, in case you decide you do want a catflap www.theglazingpeople.co.uk/dog-cat-flaps-double-glazing-glass-upvc-patio-doors/
and congratulations on your successful adoption.
