My girl I also got at 8 months & she hid from us for a while. She slowly started quietly getting nearer and nearer before finally trying a lap out and now sleeps on my chest most of the night.
It makes you feel like the chosen one when a cat comes to sit on your lap.

Day 3 and Gizmo is warming to us now, we have an enclosed balcony and he decided that he would stay there for a bit but now he's with us in the living room, laying down next to my dh, he's had a good day playing with the toys we bought him
