My cat keeps miaowing. What's wrong?

He seems perfectly well but he's taken to miaowing a lot in the evenings and it's getting on my last nerve. He wants something - but he has food, water, a playmate he likes, stokes on demand, a cat flap, games.

What the hell does he want?

Just likes the sound of his own voice probably Grin. Do you talk back to him?

HunkyPunk · 08/04/2021 22:24

Is he eating, drinking, pooing and weeing as normal?

QueenPaw · 08/04/2021 22:26

Mine never shuts up. He tries to miaow while he's already miaowing and loses his voice sometimes because he's made his throat sore Hmm blissful silence
If I'm in bed he will shout at himself in the mirror Confused
I asked the vet if it was dementia but they've said "no, just a weirdo"
I have no answers I'm afraid!

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 08/04/2021 22:27

One of my cat’s nicknames is Sing Song. Sigh.

awesomekillick · 08/04/2021 22:32

He's doing all the normal things other than this damn moaning.

Of course I talk to him! He knows loads of words!

I suspect he's telling me the kitten has fleas, there are ants in the kitchen again, and why have i blocked his exits from the garden (kitten-proofed it). Or hes just finding me insufferable dull. Ho hum.

He wants to go out, but it's too cold.
He doesn't like that food anymore
You have moved a chair slightly
He wants the heating on
He wants you to go to bed so he can lie on you
There's a big bully cat that keeps coming into his garden
He's jealous of the kitten

maslinpan · 08/04/2021 22:42

He wants what all cats want: complete control of your attention.

Mumdiva99 · 08/04/2021 22:48

One of mine has started meowing ar bedtime....she's doing it for attention....or because we've shut a door, or because she doesn't think I've left the right snacks at bed time, or because she wants to sleep on DD2 or she's changed her mine and wants the door to DS3 bedroom open, or because she hasn't played laser pen yet before bed.......she's just woken 2 our of 3 kids up.....then she settles down happily for the night.

I though cats would be easy pets! Lol. Worse than toddlers.

Welldarn · 08/04/2021 22:55

Are you WFH?

He’s sick of you and is hoping if he keeps shouting, you will go back to work and give him his house back. Grin

expectopelargonium · 08/04/2021 22:59

How old is he? Senior cats do tend to start doing this.

Cattitudes · 08/04/2021 23:00

One of ours meows because her favourite door is shut, even though another door and window are open to get into the house. Your cat could be meowing for any reason under the sun, just because he can.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2021 23:05

I have one that doesn't shit up as well. She just likes to give her opinion on everything!

To be honest, I’d be thankful that said cat doesn’t shit up - that conjures up a whole host of unpleasant images and scenarios 😂
TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/04/2021 01:56

How long have you had your kitten?
As perhaps there's a case of 'sibling' jealousy?
Big brother/sister feeling out of sorts as there's an interloper the new baby?

ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel · 09/04/2021 04:17

He wants a chat

sunflowersandbuttercups · 09/04/2021 13:04

We have a VERY vocal kitten. He's one now and has only started to shut up in the last month or two Grin

I just talk back to him! He loves company too - and he's smart. He comes to me when I call him, and he knows various commands like up, down, paw, sit etc.

Do you play with him a lot?

CongealedCrags · 09/04/2021 13:43

He's reminding you of your responsibilities regarding the weather. No sky water, plenty of sun, no gusts of wind up the bum, exactly the correct temperature.

CongealedCrags · 09/04/2021 13:44

And if you have an Alexa and ask her to meow, she will.

kittensarecute · 09/04/2021 13:45

Missy does this sometimes, it means she wants attention.

ThinkYouveHadTooMuch · 09/04/2021 13:45

Mine does this. She's just an arsehole Grin

wonderstuff · 09/04/2021 13:50

I have 2 cats and they cry around midnight if one is in and the other is out and/or if they haven't noticed I've fed them. Got up last night to crying, walked to the cat bowl, she followed me and then started eating the food that had been there from before I went to bed.

They also sometimes alert me to a mouse they've brought me. Often still alive. This morning I found mouse entrails worked into my cream living room carpet. Amazing the amount of coverage they managed.

Just as well they're cute.

JustNotFunAnymore · 09/04/2021 13:52

Female in season close by?

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 09/04/2021 13:54

Vet nurse here. If the vocalising is not normal for him I would cage him to check he is passing faeces and urine. Male cats get bladder issues at the drop of a hat. You need to make sure he is passing urine or doesn't have an intestinal blockage. If you wanted to take this theme further you can get plastic beaded litter that the urine runs through so the ample can be checked for blood protein, white cells etc.

Svalberg · 09/04/2021 13:57

There's probably a kitten stuck down a well & he's telling you so that you can rescue it

Toddlerteaplease · 09/04/2021 14:35

You should have heard the lecture I got from
cheddar when I got home from work this morning.
