Living by train tracks?

We are considering a house that backs on to a train line. Wondering anyone has any insight if this will be an issue for our cat? I am worried that she could be hit but do cats tend to be savvy enough to steer clear? We currently live on a very quiet road (the new road would be very quiet too) so I'm not sure how road wise she is if this makes a difference.

How close is the train line? There's a not very busy railway line behind my house but we have our garden fence then an area of wilderness and then a tall metal fence before the hill that leads down to the railway line. Dont know if my cats have ever ventured down there

We lived within 100 yards if the midland mainline. But it was up a steep back with a fence. So doubt very much our cats went up there. I don't think even the most stupid cats would hang around on a railway with a train coming.

In my experience it’s not worth the risk. My old girls siblings lived near a train line and 2 were killed on it. The family lost many other cats that way as well.

Where I volunteer we won’t rehome near a train line unless it’s a catio only/indoor home and even then, only if we are confident that the cat won’t be an escape artist.

Mine have lasted 4 years with it. I'm not sure they'd try to climb the metal railings as they are pointed at the top

My friend has lost two on the railway tracks and she didnt even live right near them. She never imagined they went down there.

Probably depends on whether the cat can get to the trainline/how far it is from the garden/nature of the cat. We lived for 5 years with 2 cats next to a trainline but it had a big fence running alongside it so they couldn't get to it. We got both of them from cats protection who did a home check and didn't say a word about it.

Thanks all.

It has a very small garden and then train line directly behind. I couldn't see that there was any embankment or additional fencing to the garden fence. I was surprised how little I noticed the noise though and don't think I would have been too bothered if it wasn't for cat considerations.

We have decided not to go for it for a number of reasons but I do think this would always be at the back of my mind if we lived there.

Fingers crossed something else comes up soon!
