Cat in flat?

I’m buying a second floor flat with a balcony (moving from rented flat) and wondering how realistic it would be to have a cat. I’ve shared a house with one before but never owned one.

I know I’d need to catproof the balcony & provide plenty of entertainment inside. When things are back to normal I’ll be out 7-7 three days per week.

Is this a terrible idea or could it work?

Would anyone else be in the flat or will you be living alone?
Asking because I know my cat would be upset at being alone for 12 hours, she runs to greet me when I walk through the door after being out for 6/7 hours, she has even jumped through the open window to meet me in the garden when she’s heard my car pull onto the drive.

Depends on the cat. My not overly dynamic Persians would be very happy in a flat. My parents cat originally lived in a flat and they adopted him, believing him to be an indoor cat. He's not!

Cats get bored in a flat if they can't get outside and enjoy sunbathing, playing etc. My bf has a cat that's mad. She hides

Adopt an FIV+ cat. They need loving homes, they mustn't go outside so make ideal flat cats Grin

She's scared of visitors, including me, she poos and wees everywhere. Not a good idea

DH had two when he lived in his flat. They were happy being in his flat they had the run of the entire flat.

He got them as vet young kittens.

Even now we live in a house with a garden DH’s cat will not go far. And spends his days curled up asleep indoors (preferably near DH)

Just me. I was wondering about an FIV+ cat but yes, I am worried about the time alone.

Have a chat with local rescues. They may have an elderly cat who will sleep most of the day and be happy with just a balcony or suitable for your situation for other reasons.

That’s a great idea, helpfulperson, thank you.
