Our cat keeps weeing on the sofa

We have two cats, both about 7.

One (I'm not sure which) has decided they now like weeing on the sofa. Not all the time, just now and again but regularly enough to be an issue.

They share a litter tray and always have and I have replaced it with a new one since it started. I also use litter liners and replace the litter twice a week (scooping out in between)

I think it started because we got some new cushions which have a kind of raggy texture which he took a shine too.

I've washed the cushions, and the sofa covers but obviously can't wash the sofa pads themselves.

I've tried dettol spray and febreze and some kind of stop cat spray but it's still happening.

I had a cat that did this. The only thing that stopped it was putting something on the sofa and blocking access. Usually my handbag or books.

It's a big corner sofa so not sure how I'll manage it.

I'll have a go!

My old sofa had washable civets. So I put puppy pads underneath the covers so it wouldn't soak into the cushions. It was much easier when I got a leather sofa, by which time it had practically stopped.

Never worked out the cause. Tried all the enzyme sprays with no effect. It was odd as she was otherwise impeccably behaved. And it was only ever the sofa.

They are still doing it. I'm attempting enzyme spray.

Have you taken to vets to rule out medical reasons? Very important to do that. Can have kidney crystal/, urine infection, thyroid issues and a whole host of other issues that could be causing your cat pain and distress that cause this change in behaviour.

Get another litter box - have it in the room where the sofa is

Vet check

Feliway plug ins

No unsupervised access to the sofa

Enzyme spray for cleaning then catnip spray to change the association

Play and hand feed on the spot where they are weeing- again about changing the association.

All our cats have had a phase of pissing on beds and duvets and this is how we have broken the habit.

Good luck

In the meantime, you an buy waterproof sofa covers on Amazon which might be a worthwhile investment

That's a fab idea. Thank you!

You're welcome Smile. My kitten had an accident on the bed at one point. Although he's never had a wee on the sofa, having quite recently spent £££ on a new sofa I wasn't willing to take the risk!
