Cat has come in looking odd

My adopted cat has started enjoying spending time in the garden. Today she was out there with a neighbouring cat, and she has come in looking strange - half way down her back all her hair is standing up sort of in a ring. She's got some wet, slick bits in her fur, and I think a clump of the other cat's fur.

Any ideas what this could be - could they have been fighting?

Sounds like they got into a fight. I would check her over for any serious wounds and just give her cuddles, some treats and keep an eye on her today and tomorrow. My cat tends to be quite sore after a fight and we keep her in for a day or two.

Hope she’s ok!

Has she been spayed?

Make sure you check for cat bites, they can get infected really quickly and if so your cat can end up quite poorly. Cats hide pain well so pay close attention.

One of ours got bitten in a fight and the next morning she was walking around quite gingerly, we took her to the vet and she had a lot of inflammation and was really ill.

Thank you, I can't see any wounds at all but she is a more jumpy than normal - although in general, pretty jumpy.

She has been spayed, we did it when she was about six months, when she came to us. The other cat is a male but I was assuming it wasn't that , as she has been spayed.

Our rescue cat was spayed but a local stray Tom cat kept trying to mate with her and she was definitely interested.

We asked the rescue for advice and they thought she could have retained ovarian tissue and recommended another surgery.

It turned out they were right - she couldn’t have got pregnant but she was still going into season and responsive to male cats who wanted to mate with her!
