How do I find some ethical cats or kittens?

Having just moved into a new place with a garden I'm looking forward to getting a pair of feline friends. However all the rescues locally have nothing and I feel weird getting a kitten from gumtree. Not interested in pedigree really so no use looking for a certified breeder.

Where do I go?

I second FB, some smaller local rescues have pages on there. Still registered charities but some don’t have actual websites.

My experience is that, with the right care and plenty of time/space, a nervous cat can become a very loving cat, so don't be put off if this is the only type of cat you can find, OP

This .
Our male ( we got bro/sis) has blossomed from a cat who scarpered if we looked the wrong way to a lardy feline who sleeps on our bed , adores DD , pre-empts the 13.30 Dreamies alarm and actively dribbles when being fussed .
Makes a weird 'peacock' noise when stressed (like going into the travel cage)

As far as ethics goes they scorn my vegetarian beliefs , wear real fur , kill things randomly and have a dubious work ethic .(ie none)

Nervous cats are just very, very stressed being in a cage with other cats, we wouldn’t like it either.

They blossom in a loving home. I would ask at the vets too, they might know someone who is looking too.

I rehomed an adult cat from a small local rescue just over a month ago. DH and are are totally in love with him Grin
I was having no luck with Cats Protection or bigger places as they had huge waiting lists or were not taking on any more enquiries.
A friend of mine alerted me to a post on Facebook from a small rescue centre looking from r potential adopters for our gorgeous boy. I messaged them and got lucky. They vetted us and we picked him up a few days later.

It might be worth researching relatively local rescues and following them on social media then enquiring about specific cats they advertise as ready for adoption.

Cats aren't ethical. They are small furry dictators.

You missed the word "homicidal" from that description! Grin

We really struggled in feb/March 10 years ago when we got our adult rescue cat as there were very limited numbers and we had two small children. We did find one eventually in a smaller rescue but I agree you might be better waiting a month or two when there will be more kittens and likely more cats as less demand for them when the cute kittens arrive.

We took on our kitten last year from a friend who had a litter.

I agree with thecatneuterer. In a couple of months time the shelters will be overflowing with kittens and mums as usual. We’re fostering a litter and their mum at the mo.
