Iv fluids during castration

My little kitty is off to the vets this week to be castrated. The vet has said that he can have iv fluids during the op as an optional extra, however said that although it's a recommendation, the op itself is very quick and not many take up the option of fluids. This makes me think that it's not strictly necessary perhaps.Any advice, thoughts gratefully received!

I thought if it as helpful to keep them hydrated post surgery when groggy and home and possibly not drinking.
So I went for the IV.
Only drawback more money.

IV fluids are good during anaesthesia as they support the kidneys assisting excretion of the anaesthetic, and restore volume to the blood if there is bleeding during surgery.

But for a cat castration, I definitely wouldn't bother in a perfectly healthy cat. It takes all of 3 or 4 minutes to do and then the cat's woken up.

When I worked at a vets we would only have recommended fluids for an operation as quick as a castration if the cat was over 7 years old.

My vet advised that fluids were a good idea in older cats or those with renal issues. My cat went in for a dental recently and I declined IV fluids as she's young and healthy - the vet supported that decision.

Also as a PP said, castration is a very, very quick operation, it's not as though they're under anaesthetic for hours. I've watched a vet do a castration, so quick and simple!

Thanks all for your advice. He is a young healthy kitten so will probably give the fluids a miss.
