Bleach - does it make cats crazy?

I noticed once after I cleaned the shower tray with bleach that my cat started rolling around on the bathroom mat as if she was enjoying herself. Didn't want to read too much into it.

This evening Dh used some bleach in the kitchen and she started to do the same thing on the kitchen floor.

Is this unusual behaviour? Has anyone else experienced this Confused

Yes my cat loves the smell of bleach, unless she ever smells it on DH's hands then she bites him Grin something about it mimicking their pheromones if I remember correctly Confused

Yes my cat loves it, it is a thing

HarrietOh · 24/02/2021 23:41

Yeah bleach used to make my old cat go crazy!

SummerSazz · 24/02/2021 23:42

Not that I've noticed but she's a lazy pudding. Unless there is a mouse nearby.... Hmm

My 14 year old cat goes a bit mental at bleach.. first she gets a bit bitey then calms down and starts rolling around the floor doing the weird mouth shuddering thing 😂

ThisMustBeMyDream · 24/02/2021 23:47

Yep. It's a cat thing. My cats have all reacted like its catnip!

Ok, so I wasn’t imagining it!

I know that you shouldn’t leave bleach lying around but it makes me wonder if I need to be extra careful with it in case she tries to drink it?

I sometimes soak tea towels in a bleach solution and leave them sitting on the kitchen counter.

All my cats love it. They get bitey and excited if it's on my hands and then rub their faces all over them.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/02/2021 10:33

Yeah, I'd be putting those towels way out of reach.

EventuallyDeleted · 25/02/2021 10:34

Yes, if I soak anything in the sink I put a tray over it to stop then getting at it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/02/2021 10:43

With a nice hefty rock on top?

EventuallyDeleted · 25/02/2021 11:12

With the closed bottle of bleach on top usually. I'd hear it clatter if they went near it then and it would make them jump and run away.

My girls cat goes wild for bleach. I make sure my hands are properly washed if ive been using it but she can still smell it. Like others she goes a bit bitey then starts rolling all over the place drooling as she goes!! Her brother and my last cat isnt/wasn't bothered at all!

thecatneuterer · 26/02/2021 12:38

I've never come across that, but I know it's toxic to cats (more so than to humans).

PainterInPeril · 26/02/2021 12:47

Cats don't need bleach to act crazy, they are crazy already! Still, that's their story and they're sticking to it!Grin
