Thyronorm - side effects

Hi there

My lovely cat has been feeling very sorry for himself lately and the vets suspect hyperthyroidism. Blood tests confirm he has slightly elevated levels but nothing hugely worrying. They’ve started him on thyronorm but he seems like a shadow of his former self since starting it - lethargic and ‘down’. Most worrying is that he’s not eating when previously he enjoyed his food to the point of greediness. He also went through a period of being sick multiple times a day which the vet thinks was a contraindication with Metacam for his dental pain (poor old boy has recently had some extractions). She took him off the metacam and the sickness has stopped but he still won’t eat.

Has anyone else experienced these types of side effects with thyronorm - sickness, lethargy etc? Or are these just the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and the medication hasn’t got it under control yet?

I feel so desperately sorry for him - he used to be such a laid back cat but now seems constantly sad.

Hi op, yes have experienced this with DCat2. As with any new medication the dose may need adjusting until it's right, but as we've done this the lethargy, sickness (and vocalising!) have all improved.

Thanks. We’ll speak to the vet about dosage. He’s got another blood test soon to check if his levels are stabilising so I’ll raise it then. Hopefully he’ll be back to his old self in no time

You're welcome, and good luck. Regular communication with your vet is key to managing any chronic health issues (two hyperthyroid DCats on different treatments, plus a diabetic, here, so lots of experience!)
