White cats and suncream

Hi, this is my first visit to the litter tray!
We homed a rescue cat in September. He is a beautiful big white fluffy thing. We were told that he will need suncream in the summer.
Is there cat sunscreen or will our factor 50 do?
Where should we apply it? Just his ears or on his pinker belly too?
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about belly (i guess it depends how much time he spends sleeping on his back?) but most definitely ears and nose.

One of ours has a pink nose and we found she just licked all the sun cream off (even though it was meant to be a lick proof one for cats). Now we have a powder sunscreen we use on her nose. We apply it with a sponge (a bit like a giant powder puff). Much quicker and she barely notices it so doesn't try to lick it off.

Belly should be fine as long as he doesn't have any bald patches, it's only where the hair is very fine e.g. ears, nose that you really have to worry about. Sort of like not bothering to put sun cream on a child's back if they are wearing a thick T shirt, the fur acts like clothing does.

We used to use a coloured stick on our white cat. We just did't tell him he had purple ears. Looking back, he was remarkably good about having it put on.

Cat sunscreens didn't exist in those days. So he got normal or kids stuff.

Thank you!
So great tips here. I've loving the idea of accessorising my cat with coloured ears Grin

I use cat sunscreen on my cat in the summer - I think it’s called Filtabac and I got it on Amazon. I use it on my cat’s ears and one dose lasts a few days (it’s like a complete sunblock because the lotion is very thick).

Welcome to The Litter Tray 😁.

He is one beautiful pusscat! What's his name?

Obviously some suncream is better than none but my white cat used to just wash it off 🤦🏼‍♀️

It makes my cat so miserable having sun cream on her ears ( she is black and white) so we don't always put it on. She suffers from stress related cystitis so I worry about setting that off.
If anyone knows of an easy to apply effective sun cream for cats I would appreciate it. I tried the nivea baby last summer as the vet recommended, it seemed to make her ears very RED!

I am interested in the powder, do ya have a link?

Bunnybigears · 16/02/2021 22:01

We just use factor 50 baby sun cream on our cats white ears. Its only her ears that are white so never put it anywhere else.

violetbunny · 17/02/2021 03:46

@bellagogosdead I'm not in the UK so a link may not be much good to you I'm afraid.

This is the powder sunscreen, I noticed that here it's not commonly sold in pet stores but seems to be available in equine supply stores as I think powder sunscreens are also used for horses? So if you cannot find a local powder sunscreen for cats/dogs in pet stores then you may want to try a place that sells horse care products.
