My killer cats

I've 2 cats they're 2 years old and committed hunters. I had been locking them out at night, but took pity on them in the cold and let them in the kitchen and disposing of a dead mouse every couple of days.

Today I came down to a dead rat in my kitchen. It was huge.

I can't be doing with this, can I do anything? They're often out in the evening, and I don't want to make them house cats. Would a collar work, they've never worn one before. Would they be okay outside over night?

They often bring in live mice, have brought in a live rabbit before, a live rat I don't think I could cope with...

Help!

Collar with a small bell on so mice/rats know they are on the hunt?

It's worth a try. I worry about them getting caught, but that probably is quite rare.

I either lock my cat out or in depending on the weather. I put a catflap in the green house and he has a cosy corner in there so he goes there as necessary.

No a collar won’t work. You should keep them in from dusk till dawn.

Nighttime's the worst for them getting run over too so it’s for their safety too.

womaninatightspot · 08/02/2021 10:30

I've tried cat collars with bells before they go out in them the collars don't come back. They have safety releases in case they're caught, I assume they just prowl through the bushes till it pops off.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/02/2021 10:52

They probably remove it themselves, I stopped using one when the Bengal came through the flap with a front leg caught in his collar & the elastic part caught on his bottom canine tooth so his jaw was open too.

wonderstuff · 08/02/2021 11:14

Sounds nasty @Fluffycloudland77 that is my fear. When one of them had a lampshade collar after surgery she was very adapt at getting it off. She took off the coat thing after she was neutered too. Houdini like.

I've ordered collars, because many that'll work, but I'm nervous about them. Think I'll try keeping them in over night.

It was so big, the thought of it running round my kitchen (shudders). I had a quick google and apparently once one rat is killed the others tend to bugger off, but no idea how true that is.

My old cat used to bring in live mice and put them in my bed when I was sleeping. The other one would do it with slow worms.
These live mice would run about and breed until the whole house stank of mice pee and I've have to get exterminators in.
Humane traps do not work.

My two are committed hunters. We keep them in overnight and I now only have the catflap open outwards. Otherwise I'm greeted with this kind of thing from a couple of weeks ago...

wonderstuff · 08/02/2021 11:28

OMG @Shehasadiamondinthesky I don't think I could have kept the cat! Shock

@Pascha looks familiar. Now we're home all day I think out only cat flap is probably doable.
