Blood in kitten poo

xxxJess123xxx · 06/02/2021 22:01

Hi all, had kitten 2 weeks. She is now 10 weeks. Came on whiskas dry and wet and kept her on this while she was new to us.
Blood in poo from the off. Poo is hard with bright red blood in.
No signs of illness. Happy playing eating and drinking.
I got her a worming tablet from the vets when she had her first injections as I presumed worms but that was over a week ago.and still blood in every poo.
Rang vet, prescribed pro kolin. Still blood in poo but now mushy poo
Any ideas?! Change food? Thanks all

Might be a daft question but can I just check you haven’t given her milk?
The only time mine had that happen was when a neighbour repeatedly gave a saucer of milk! I got a tag made in the end saying ‘allergies. Do not feed’.

DwangelaForever · 06/02/2021 22:08

Sounds like gastroenteritis, my vet prescribed pro biotics and reduce food to boiled chicken. Slowly reintroduce cat food. Caused by food being too rich. We noticed this only happened to my boy when he was on a mix of wet and dry foods so he is back to being exclusively wet.

xxxJess123xxx · 06/02/2021 22:11

No, not given her milk

She does have wet and dry down yes, but I didn't think whiskas was rich, rather the opposite eg a bit crap lol
I'm unsure what to do x

Take her off whiskas dry. Try Butchers Choice which is cereal free and available in supermarkets. Try plain boiled chicken.

In time, re-introduce some dry that is cereal free. You might have to order this online. (Zooplus have a wide range and often do small packets e.g. 400g so you can try her before committing to a bigger bag).

No milk, no Dreamies (basically crap calories) or other treats.

Make sure she always has access to water.

xxxJess123xxx · 06/02/2021 22:37

Butchers choice is wet is it? Shall I do a straight swop?
I really want to get the feeding right if that is what is causing the blood. X

Also guilty of dreamies.
Any recommendations for healthy treats? This is a picture of the little rascal

She might be straining to go to the toilet which is causing bleeding.
I give my cats malt paste which is good for hairballs but also promotes healthy intestines. They love it. I don't know if kittens can eat it though.

xxxJess123xxx · 06/02/2021 22:49

Her poo is hard which i thought was some of the reason for the blood but the pro kolin has made it go mushy with blood still x

She could still be a little sore. When one og my cats 1st came home she ended up with very soft poo so we gave her boiled chicken. It cleared up in a couple of days. But if it hadn't, id have taken her to the vets. I think with your wee one id be making another appointment.

xxxJess123xxx · 06/02/2021 23:12

Vet said to give it 5 days with the pro kolin but will make an appointment if no improvement after that. She is completely fine in her self strangly x

Ahhh such a cutie! I hope the problem is resolved soon.

xHeartinacagex · 07/02/2021 08:26

She is gorgeous! We used to have a cat who couldn't tolerate any dry food without getting constipated, it was a while back but I'm sure once we changed to just wet food she was ok. We just used whiskas pouches, nothing fancy. She always needed to drink a bit more than our other cats too so make sure there's access to fresh water.

I'd maybe give the vet a wee call to be on the safe side if no improvement after the 5 days.

Heatherbell1978 · 07/02/2021 08:27

One of my kittens had the same issue a few weeks ago now (mine are now 5 months and been with us since 12 weeks). It happened as I was changing him on to Whiskas and he got really fussy at the same time. The vet gave us some gastroenteritis food to try which I now buy online. It's not cheap but it's sorted the problem!

xxxJess123xxx · 07/02/2021 09:31

Shes such a poppet I just want the best for her x

VettiyaIruken · 07/02/2021 09:35

She's so cute!

You need to give her better quality food. Grain free for a start.

Give her the best you can afford.
Oh. And don't buy in bulk. I swear the little shites wait until they see 48 tins of lovely food arrive from zooplus to decide they now hate their current food and will never eat it again. 🤬

xxxJess123xxx · 07/02/2021 12:03

Iv just got her wainwright's kitten food, looks much better meat amount and no crap in it like whiskas, I'm hoping that will be better for her xx

We had all sorts of poo problems with ours shortly after we got him last year. Eventually they were solved by going onto all meat wet food - Zooplus has quite a few but Feringa has proved to be the one he likes best.

xxxJess123xxx · 08/02/2021 21:25

She hasn't been a poo today but its her second day on wainwright's wet and dry. Hopefully when she does a poo later there will be no blood, fingers crossed x

xxxJess123xxx · 09/02/2021 00:27

Still blood in poo this evening but ever ever soooo slightly less I would say

OP posts:
jaundicedoutlook · 09/02/2021 07:32

Try taking away the dry food for a few days and just go with wet. Some of them struggle with dry food.

xxxJess123xxx · 09/02/2021 09:32

OK ill try that thank you x

OP posts:
LApprentiSorcier · 09/02/2021 09:35

If it doesn't improve ask the vet to check for a giardia infection, as this can cause blood in poo. It can be treated with antibiotics.

xxxJess123xxx · 09/02/2021 12:05

OK will do, is that confirmed with a poo sample?

OP posts:
LApprentiSorcier · 09/02/2021 12:12

Yes, the vet will take a stool sample.
