Kitten poorly after spay

Hi all,

Just looking for some reassurance. 5 month kitten spayed on Tuesday and has not been recovering well. The wound is healing but she's vomiting and not eating or drinking. Went back to vets yesterday and they gave her a different pain killer, anti nausea jab and some fluids but she's no better today and still can't even keep a tiny bit of water down. She's seeing vet again this afternoon but just wanted to hear if anyone else had this and how long they were poorly for. It's awful seeing her like this... she looks so sad.

It's very, very unusual. I'm sorry she;s not well. Just keep making sure the vets are on the case.

miccoops · 05/02/2021 12:50

Oh no.. I’m so sorry to read this. You’re totally doing the right thing working with the vet. Do they think she has an infection? Thinking of you.

Prestel · 05/02/2021 15:22

If it's an infection you might notice her head and ears feeling unusually hot, which can indicate a fever. I hope the vet gets to the bottom of it today and she's feeling better soon.

jobnockey · 05/02/2021 16:11

Thanks everyone for your replies.

So the vet has decided to keep her in over the weekend... There's no visible signs of infection but she does have a slightly raised temperature, so they want to be able to monitor her and said if she stays in, they can keep an eye on her fluids and everything else as well , as it may be hard to see an emergency vet over the weekend.

I know she's in the best place to get whatever care she needs, but can't help thinking it must be really serious for them to want to keep her in... can't stop thinking about her - its going to be the longest weekend ever.

So sorry to hear that. I expect the vet is being cautious because she's a kitten, they can deteriorate quite quickly when they become dehydrated, a real danger with vomiting. Our little tortie had some issues after being spayed as well, though very different from yours, she managed to tear some internal stitches and had to have a second op. It's always horrible when you have to leave them at the vets. I hope she's home soon.

Vinorosso74 · 05/02/2021 17:01

Hope she recovers soon. Staying in the vets is sensible and they know what they're looking out for. I think the chance of complications from spaying and neutering is generally low especially weighed up against pregnancy especially in a young cat.

Wolfiefan · 05/02/2021 17:02

I’m so sorry she’s poorly. She’s definitely in the best place for now. Hope she can be home with you soon.

miccoops · 05/02/2021 17:04

Oh you must be worried sick. She is absolutely in the best place, they’ll really be able to monitor and get fluids into her. As @Prestel said kittens don’t have deserves and can deteriorate quickly so they’ll be looking after her.

I've just had the same issue. The vet said a reaction to the painkiller is fairly common. My slightly deranged kitten is 6 months old and spayed nearly three weeks ago. She had vomiting and diarrhoea the day after the operation and stopped eating or drinking.

It seems it was the painkillers so the the vet gave her an injection, took her off the painkillers and gave her something for the upset stomach. I had to feed her boiled chicken breasts for over a week, 6 or more tiny meals a day to start with, and multiple glasses of water scattered around as she prefers to steal drinks.

She is finally back to normal more than 2 weeks later, although the horror of the diarrhoea smeared across my living room every morning may take longer to fade.

Hope yours feels better soon!

She's home! I'm so relieved! Had a horrible weekend of not really knowing how she was as we couldn't get hold of anyone for any updates... Bit annoyed at the vet for not phoning us at all over the weekend tbh...

Anyway - we were able to pick her up this morning and she seems fine now, eating normally and being her usual self - a bit clingy but I'm enjoying the cuddles.

Couldn't speak to a vet when we got her so not really sure what the problem was... i'll call later to see if i can find out more just in case it was likely to be a reaction to a pain killer. Could be relevant if she ever needs them again (hopefully not!)

Anyway for now just glad to have her home with us. (big cat doesn't agree ha!)

Thank you everyone for your messages . @CornedBeef451 i'm glad your girl is feeling better too. Hopefully you're recovering too from the poo trauma!

Ahhh, she's beautiful! Glad she's home safe.

Prestel · 08/02/2021 14:51

Thanks for the update, I was thinking about her today. Glad to hear she's better.

thecatneuterer · 08/02/2021 15:48

I've been wondering about her. I'm very happy to hear this.

miccoops · 08/02/2021 17:20

@jobnockey I'm so pleased you posted I was thinking of you! That's great news - I'm so pleased :-)

jobnockey · 08/02/2021 17:46

@miccoops it is lovely to have her back although I may be picking your brains before too long about how to settle the big cat again! He's not very happy today now she's back... quite a bit of hissing and swiping which he's not done before.. I'm hoping it' just the vet smell and he'll settle down...

@jobnockey Leo has pretty much settled back to as it was before now. It took a while though and when we stopped her recovery suit. I think really though it was when she was acting more like usual and trying to play.. Leo just decided to join in again! A good week or so post op.. I’m relieved. They seem to enjoy each other although she does drive him mad!

jobnockey · 10/02/2021 11:44

@miccoops he's still being a bit grumpy with her but i found them curled up together in his bed this morning so I think he's appreciative of her body warmth if nothing else...
