My cat has died

Bbqknuckles · 03/02/2021 16:16

My little baby has died today. He was called bbq knuckles (nc for pics). 1.5 years old. We have had him since he was born as we took in a stray cat who turned out to be pregnant and only had the 1 (him) so we kept him too. He was so handsome and a really boisterous kitty. I have no idea what happened. He was a bit distant yesterday but no other issues, I was busy wfh so didn't really pay any mind to it. I have just ventured downstairs to find him laying funny, but he was definitely still alive, so I cuddled him and whilst I was phoning the vets he passed. I am so sad.

I wouldn’t have had an autopsy either, it doesn’t change anything and you did everything right.

Snooch12 · 04/02/2021 16:58

Oh my god, that's just awful! I'm so sorry Bbq, what a terrible shock. Really glad to see that you are going to have tests done as apart from the obvious potential of danger to your other cats, it would haunt me forever wanting to know what had happened. Very strange that he had no other symptoms. I feel horrible for you. Have lost three cats in the last two years (the latest just a couple of months ago) - two were old and were PTS but the one, my absolute darling, was only 9 months old and it was sudden and traumatic. Losing one so young is heartbreaking - a life barely lived, and such a shock when its so unexpected. Much love and strength Flowers

Snooch12 · 04/02/2021 17:00

Sorry Bbq, just saw that after speaking to the vet you've decided not to go all the way with tests etc. Sounds like you've made the right decision under the circumstances x

TheoriginalLEM · 04/02/2021 17:11

It would have actually been quite obvious to the vet if this was a urinary blockage as his bladder would have been very full and they would have been able to feel it.

A blocked bladder is an emergency because ot causes life ending toxicity very quickly and sadly we often don't see these kitties until its too late, it can be a matter of hours so even if it was this , unless you had noticed him straining to pee you wouldn't have known and most cats go outside anyway.

It sounds like he died quickly and painlessly and there was really nothing you could have done.

Please remember all the lovely cuddles you had together, it sounds like he was very loved Flowers

Oh I’m so sorry. Thoughts are with you

pullingmyhairout2 · 04/02/2021 17:20

So sorry to hear this. I lost my cat in August, she was only 5. She had something called saddle thrombus. Which is a blood clot in a artery that joins the two back legs. I had never heard of it but apparently it's quite common. This may be what's happened to your cat?
Either way it's horrible when they go so quickly and so young. My thoughts are with you.x

Snooch12 · 04/02/2021 17:22

I second what Theoriginal said - one of my males had a full urinary blockage due to crystals in his urine and he was very, very ill the day we took him in - he was growling and vomiting from the pain, I don't think its something you would have missed at that point.

Labobo · 04/02/2021 17:24

I'm so sorry. He's a beautiful boy and he clearly had a loving home. We had a rescue cat who died too soon as well, years ago. I was glad he died in my arms, knowing he was loved, like your lovely bbqknuckles.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 04/02/2021 17:54

Oh I am so so sorry. He is the most handsome boy and whilst he has gone far too soon, to be in his own home being cuddled by his mum would have been such a comfort.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 04/02/2021 17:56

I don't know if he had gone to the same crematorium that my little lady went to a few weeks back (in hook) but they honestly couldn't have been any nicer.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/02/2021 18:05

I'm so sorry, he was gorgeous. He was loved & died in your arms.

You didn't do anything wrong, cats are very good at hiding signs of being unwell.

Give his mum lots of cuddles

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/02/2021 19:16

I think if he’d been blocked he would have been very distressed.

frugalkitty · 05/02/2021 16:29

I'm sorry about your lovely little cat, that's so young. I lost our 13 year old cat a week ago, he'd not been right on the Wednesday, I thought he might be constipated so I took him to the vet first thing Thursday morning, they said he had a blocked bladder and needed an op. Came round ok, but later that evening the vet rang to say his bladder had blocked again, even with the catheter in and although they'd put him back under to drain it etc there really wasn't anything they could do. It's taken me a week but I've finally stopped crying, and blaming myself for not taking him the day before, even though it sounds like the outcome would have been the same. So instead, now the shock has worn off (our other cats have been poorly before dying so this was an absolute shock as it never crossed my mind that he wouldn't come home) I've focussed on the good life and love we gave him, and I'm grateful that in the end what got him was quick, and not a condition that dragged on for months or years which would have been awful for him.

I hope you find peace soon Flowers

Bbqknuckles · 06/02/2021 00:12

Thank you everyone. I'm sorry for your losses @snooch12 and @frugalkitty (and everyone else who has lost a kitty) I completely understand. @TheoriginalLEM I'm just holding onto the fact he didn't seem like he was in any pain and the vet said I likely would have known if he was as you mentioned. @pullingmyhairout2 maybe, the vet said there was no way to know without invasive procedures. He looked so peaceful so I really just wanted to leave him be. He died being cuddled knowing he was loved so much and that's all I can do now, it's not like I can go back.

My cats don't usually sleep upstairs (their choice) but they have been the past few nights and have all been very cuddly. It's been weird filling up 3 bowls instead of 4, having 3 cats running to me when I come in the door instead of 4, counting 3 instead of 4 when I leave the room. Even buying treats today in the supermarket made me burst out into tears. I cried so much this evening I was sick. I just keep thinking what if - it's hard not to. I'll be okay, eventually. I just can't believe this has happened to us.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please don't beat yourself up feeling guilty. You gave him a loving home and he was taken too soon. It will hurt but it will ease with time x

2018SoFarSoGreat · 07/02/2021 19:04

Ah what a beautiful boy he was. So very sorry for your loss. Don't blame yourself! We can only love our kitties and so our best with what we know.

He lived a loved life. That's what you gave him. ❤️

Bbqknuckles · 17/02/2021 00:32

Thank you both. I finally have his ashes back. They also made me a fur clipping and clay print. I feel happier now he is back at home at least.

I’m so sorry to read of your loss. You sound like amazing, loving custodian of cats and I’m sure your young boy had the best life possible. XFlowers
