Why is my cat being a dick about this?

The cat started scratching the newel post about a year ago. We bought her a scratching pad instead, she was using it very enthusiastically and the newel post destruction ceased.

Now though, she's decided she wants to scratch the newel post again. How can I stop her?

Scratching pad -so a flat one?
Maybe she prefers something more upright. I’ve had one cat prefer a pad but this cat will only use an upright post.

Or you attach this to protect your post

We did used to have a scratching post, and she never touched it.

I would worry about using the corner one in case she finds the newel post even more attractive. Git.

I'll have a look for a really tall post, then maybe if it's stretching that she wants, that might satisfy her.

If you clip their claws they are not so keen to scratch everything. Its stopped my girl scratching the sofa.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/01/2021 15:06

Pets at home do a really tall one.

junecat · 28/01/2021 18:26

My boy has this www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/scratching_posts/scratching_posts/408384

He loves having a full stretch scratch and he sleeps in it most of the time 😂

Is it me, or is there something not quite right about the scale in these pictures? It’s like the film Cats all over again. Grin

I bought the tall one from Pets at Home and the cat is completely ignoring it. How do I teach her to use it? I suspect picking her up and putting her paws on it will just piss her off.

Spray it with liquid catnip.

Beamur · 29/01/2021 19:05

@Fluffycloudland77

Spray it with liquid catnip.
This. Plus move it to different places. My cats love their tall post by the window so they can look out.
GwendolineWindowlene · 29/01/2021 20:54

I sprayed it and she rolled about at the bottom of it but hasn’t yet scratched on it.

I’ve put it about a metre away from the newel post so she can see that there is an alternative.

A watched cat never uses a scratch post. She knows she’s wind you up.

WeatherwaxOn · 29/01/2021 22:40

Put orange peel on the newel post and catnip on the scratching post.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/01/2021 22:46

Or put orange on the scratch post and tell her not to go near it.

Want2beme · 29/01/2021 23:45

Wrap rope around the newell post? One of my cats took 3 months before she'd use her cat barrel.

GwendolineWindowlene · 30/01/2021 12:56

She has just used the post! Of course, as soon as she saw me looking at her she immediately stopped, but for the moment, victory is mine.

You just slipped out from under the paw there.
