Almighty pongs!

Would welcome thoughts, please!

One, otherwise ordinary cat, produces the smelliest faeces in. the. world.

He has a litter tray, due to deafness we don't think he feels safe enough to go outside and unfortunately the pong radiates throughout the house - you always know when he has used the litter tray!

His poos are, also, enormous - bigger than those of large dogs. Which may or may not be relevant. I mean, it is shocking the amount of cr*p he squeezes from his body.

In all other ways he is a healthy cat, not particularly old or young. His poos seem otherwise completely normal. He is phenomenally greedy and after polishing off his food will wait to finish off whatever the other 2 cats have left.

Assuming it's because of diet? He eats Felix and some dry cat food, but with other cats in the household it will be tricky keeping him to a strict alternative diet.

Has anyone encountered this with their own felines or have tips as to what could be causing his horrific pongs?

Mine have Felix AGAIL wet and an indoor formula dry, and occasionally either one will pass something particularly dire. However I use wood pellet litter, so once they've buried it no more offending smell. Downside of wood pellets is that they do end up tracking sawdust through the house...

General recommendations to reduce poo odour seem to be to feed with a higher meat content. Plus I gather the indoor cat foods are formulated to reduce odour (and hairballs). Covered litter trays can also help to trap the smells so they don't drift around the house.

It could be caused by an imbalance of gut bacteria, for instance as a lingering after effect from a stomach bug he has otherwise recovered from. If you consult a vet they may prescribe pre and probiotics to try to "reset" the gut if this is a suspected cause. It doesn't cost much and would definitely be worth looking into first before you start chopping and changing foods which can make delicate stomachs worse.

When we got our rescue cat she was used to eating Felix, so carried on feeding her that to start with. Her litter tray stank, as did she, you could really smell Felix on her.
Have since started feeding her high meat content more expensive cat food and her poo no longer smells, and the shape of the poos have also improved, they've become much more solid and sausage shaped.

my cat does me the favour of shouting at me when he poops so the tray gets cleaned immediately. he’s a complete diva, but it does mean my house smells better.

he’s on felix, sometimes a bit stinky but nothing really weapons-grade. i use World’s Best litter and it keeps the smell down if he decides to go in the middle of the night.

Thank you for your responses, shall try probiotics and then perhaps a different cat food. If that doesn't work, Sir Stink can have some tests!

If he uses his litter tray overnight, it doesn't pong the next morning, it just seems to be when it's fresh - and I suppose it at least let's us know that it needs emptying!

Can't be any worse than Cheddar's. And she doesn't bury it either. Envy she's better since starting indoor cat food.

I have to say that Leo's poops stink. Sometimes not so much, but other times I am nearly sick cleaning it out (Doesn't help that at 4 months pregnant some smells make me sick that didn't before).

Leo does demand that his poops are scooped straight away so it doesn't have time to settle (which I suppose is a good thing?)

TaraR2020 · 18/01/2021 17:47

'Sir Stink's' (as he is now known) is certainly worse than that of any boy I've lived with!

@toddlerteaplease
He doesn't bury either and the final assault yesterday was when poor thing had clearly stepped in because he came in the offensively smelling stuff all up his paw.

I do pity you @samlh having to deal with it while pregnant!
