Plump cat - normal or weird

Hello,
My DCat is nearly 14 and he is a very odd shape. He is very plump, but only his middle which is very round and firm. He has spindly legs and quite a normal head and tail. Basically the only fat bit is the middle of the cat. We had him scanned at the vets a couple of years ago when he originally adopted this shape as we were worried he had a tumour. We were advised he was just fat and had taken on an elderly cat shape.
The weird bit is that I’m continually surprised at how firm his fat tummy is, it’s almost like he is a balloon ready to burst.
Does anyone else have a fat elderly cat who is this shape? We had a rescue cat who had muscle wastage from being kept in a cage and he was almost ‘squishy’ if that makes sense. Elderly DCat is hard like a football.
We’ve largely abandoned slimming DCat at this stage. He has arthritis and sleeps most of the day. Prior to this he went to all the neighbours for snacks and ate wildlife.
