Oil Diffuser and cat

Hi

So just to be clear we don't actually have a cat yet but we are hoping to rescue in the next couple of months.

I have been bought an oil diffuser for Xmas but am not sure if there are any oils which would be safe to use with a cat in the house.

Does anybody have one and can recommend a harmless oil or are they a total no-no?

Thanks

What's your oil diffuser like? I have cats and there's no way the cats could unscrew the top where the water and oil goes to get at it, and the oil containers themselves are those child safe bottles. I'm thinking there must be different types with exposed oil for you to be worrying though!
Can't imagine any cat would attempt to drink such a strongly scented liquid. Mine wrinkle up their noses and sometimes move away even when the steam is near them.

Thank you @MeepleMe. It's not that I think it will drink the water/oil rather that I was worried the fumes might be bad for it.

It's one like this photo I think (I won't have it until Xmas day)

I have one of those and the noise it makes is enough to keep my cats well away from it. They are usually in to EVERYTHING!

Ah I see, you sound a very caring nearly-owner. I don't think you have anything to worry about. The cat will avoid it because of the noise and strange smell. Presuming you're not trying to create some sort of essential oil hot-box with cat inside, the fumes won't be that strong.
Enjoy becoming staff to your cat when it arrives!

Looks like it’s a bit of a no-no. Which is a shame as I wanted the white company one 🤨. Looks like that’s off now.

We have these in every room and uses essential oils. Have done for around 8 years. It's absolutely fine. You put 10 drops or so of oil in do it's not highly concentrated.

Make sure you actually use essential oils not fragrance oils.

I'd look at your sources a bit more. I don't mean to patronise, but this is an animal poisoning company. They're massively invested in getting you to belive your cat has been poisoned rather than is just a bit peaky.

I would keep essential oils away from cats www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/looking-after-your-pet/kittens-cats/cats-and-essential-oils

If I use any kind of strongly scented air freshener, eg those diffusing sticks, my cat can't bear it and starts weeing all over the house!

This actually says that there is very little risk from a diffuser. More risk from nebulising neat essential oils.

Do what you want op. But in my real life experience of loads of essential oil use around 2 cats never had a problem.

Thank you everyone. It's great to have some real life experience as well as links.

As we don't have a cat yet I may be overthinking at this stage 😂 but I have wanted a cat for so long and now my DD is older I feel it is the right time.

Thank you
