Gentle but effective brush for long haired cat

My nervous rescue cat is struggle with fur balls but I don't think she tolerate a strange new brush very well. I'm going to get some of the special paste you give them, but can anyone recommend a brush that will work but not frighten her?

Is the furminator too harsh? Zoom?

First off congrats on your new pussycat!
If puss is a bit nervous l would go gently using a lightweight brush and work up to the furminator.
Maybe use the mitten brush, its basically a large gove with soft nodules on the underside, so you're stroking and getting a brush in at the same time. And a treat after brushing always helps tooGrin

Kids tangle teaser. Furminators just take the top coat off and don't go all the way through. Rubbish on long haired cats.

Zoom groom also won't work on long haired cats. But is brilliant on short haired.

Thanks, really helpful

I have a comb I attempt to use on mine.

I've got a ZoomGroom for my long haired moggy. I do get a decent amount off him and he absolutely loves being brushed with it. Dh attacks him with the furminator on a less regular basis. He now tolerates it to a point before running away!

Zoom groom and pet teazer are my favourite. I had furminators they rip at the coat.

chocolatespiders · 05/12/2020 11:08

Pet teazer is good. It is marketed at dogs so is in that section at pets at home unless there is a new version. Zoom groom is better on my short hair cat.
I also have to cut any tangles.

chocolatespiders · 05/12/2020 11:09

Also whats the special paste?

dementedpixie · 05/12/2020 11:45

I use this on my cat. Think it was from pets at home

I think it might be malt paste, which is supposed to help with hairballs? I give this one to my cat.

We feed ours Royal Canin dry hairball food which definitely helps. Also use malt paste.

Our cat still hates being brushed and she's 13!!! Her brother loves it but rarely gets knots and his fur is a completely different texture.

My cats love the Tangle Teezer for general brushing. If they start to get knots then a metal pet grooming comb with two different comb densities is ideal.
