Kitten keeps pooing in the bath!

What can I do??

She is five months old and is litter tray trained. The tray is well maintained and I’ve used the same litter since we got her. Her sister always uses it fine too.

But recently she’s started pooing in the bath. Wtf! I feel I’m in a bit of pickle because I’m worried if I prevent the bath, she might do it somewhere else in the house.

Where's the existing tray? Could you put another tray near the bathroom?

eurochick · 03/12/2020 07:42

If they currently share a tray you might need to get a second one. Our kitten sisters happily shared until one started to come into season. I guess the other could smell the hormones in her wee or something. She started pooing in the bath and weed on the bed a couple of times, after being perfectly trained. A second tray sorted it.

The same tray? It's not clear if you just have one tray or if you are saying her sister uses the litter as well? If it's just one tray, get another.

They were both spayed about a month ago. Our bathroom is tiny, there’s not really room for another tray.

Could it have something to do with them starting to explore outside? Like marking her territory insider? I’ve had cats all my life and never had this happen 🙈

Have your girls been spayed yet? Can be done from 4 months. My vet woulsnt do my boys at 4 months so I went to a different vet who would do it.

This is a really stupid question but how would they know that one litter tray is just for one of them? Grin

Rule of thumb is a tray each and 1 spare although my 2 ended up using the same one anyway although it is an xl one

Celticdawn5 · 03/12/2020 07:46

I think it is a stress thing.
I agree a second tray is the answer.
It is best to have more than one litter tray if you have more than one cat.

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 03/12/2020 07:47

I would add another tray in a different place. I've had one cat start doing this at a similar age (also perfectly trained before) and a second tray sorted it. Kittens generally share nicely, but as they get older they sometimes want their own spot.

Cool, thanks everyone. I’ll get a small one for the bathroom. Maybe I could train her to just poo in the toilet instead 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Put the trays elsewhere. Why are you squeezing into a tiny bathroom?

dementedpixie · 03/12/2020 07:54

There is a cat toilet training thing you can buy!

vanillandhoney · 03/12/2020 08:25

One tray between two cats really isn't enough.

Ideally two cats should have three trays to choose from, all in different (private) locations.

Dontpasstovardy · 03/12/2020 08:54

Mine did this at first.

We put the litter tray in the bath, he shat next to it.

We bought 2 more litter trays to fill the bath, he shit on the bathroom floor.

We put 3 litter trays around the house incl 1 in the bath, he shit in the sink.

Maybe if you share the solution it would help OP?

My parents cat pops in their shower when something has upset him. He's a very highly strung boy.

BungleandGeorge · 03/12/2020 09:55

My single kitten did this despite having 2 trays as well. I think perhaps some of them just like using the bath! I shut the bathroom door but if it was left open there would often be a nasty surprise waiting. I think the man from ‘my cat from hell’ has an explanation of why they like the bath in particular.

Dontpasstovardy · 03/12/2020 11:35

He only stopped shitting in random places once he was allowed outside!
