We have a neutered boy who is 10 years old. He is a house cat because we live on a busy road, but we do take him out into the back garden under supervision. His adopted sister who was 6 had to be put to sleep at the start of lockdown as she had a very large abdominal tumour. He is an extremely affectionate cat and has become more so since he lost his friend and since 2 members of the household were at home on furlough, he constantly wants to be cuddled by everyone which is fine until people who arent fond of cats come to visit. He is all over everyone, visitors, workmen etc. We would like to get him a new friend for company, but are unsure if we should get a kitten or another older cat who would be happy as a house cat. He can be a bit of a grumpy old man at times. Any advice please?

Don't have any advice but it Sounds like one of mine. She especially loves men! She's very bored with lockdown as no one comes to see her.

As you are near a busy road, your options are going to be more limited as many rescues prefer to house cats away from busy roads unless they have a cat that has previously been kept as an indoor cat, which they will do from time to time, but you will have to be patient. As such, I think it would be best to be open to all ages, to improve your chances of finding a good match, although a kitten may be a bit much for an older boy who doesn't have regular access to outside for a bit of a break. That's only a guess though, your boy might be fine, and if a kitten is your only option I'm sure it could be made to work.

I have three cats. All female all indoors. The eldest one is thirteen, the middle one is four the youngest is six months old. We got the youngest when the eldest ones sister dies earlier this year.
They all get along really well most of the time only occasional hisses.
The oldest and youngest one now sleep together in the dog’s bed. Dog had to relocate !
