Putting cat to sleep today

I’ve posted twice in the past 6 months about my lovely cat and both times everyone has said its time . I’m so sorry to post again!

She has severe kidney disease. She has had a uti for 5 weeks and all the tests has shown it’s not improving . Yesterday she was violently sick, her tummy was obviously extremely uncomfortable. She’s been peeing blood for 24 hours.

She seems to be having trouble lying down so for past week I’ve been laying her down .

Two vets have told me it’s probably time- and she has weeks , not months left.

I slept on the sofa with her last night (she won’t go upstairs as too far from her litter etc). She had a lovely night but did carry on peeing blood.

I have made the decision and dd has tragically said goodbye. When she heads off to school I’ll call the vet.

Just need a handhold as she’s eaten two full pouches this morning and it’s making me wobble! DD (12), mature as always, has said we should think it’s good that she’s having a last lovely morning.

It's so hard to know when to let go, it sounds like overall her quality of life is low even though she has some good times too. From what you have said she has been going downhill and if you leave it you risk her having a horrible time.

I put my beloved boy to sleep in April and it broke my heart but knowing he had a peaceful end made a big difference.

Thinking of you today.

Vinorosso74 · 23/11/2020 08:47

It is awful having to make the decision but it sounds like it's the right time.
With our old girl she went downhill, bounced back for a few weeks then suddenly went down again. At 10pm one night we realised it was time to let her go so snuggled with her overnight and called the vets first thing.
This is the worst part of having pets but we can't let them suffer Flowers

tootyfruitypickle · 23/11/2020 09:04

Thank you for your posts and sorry for your losses.

I’ve rung the vet and waiting for a call back to see if they can do a home visit.

Meanwhile she’s sitting happily on my lap.

The last few months have been a rollercoaster, so trying to think clearly that although today is clearly a good day, she’s not beating this infection so will go downhill again. She can only have one more antibiotic shot now apparently , and it’s obviously not working as we are on week 5 and here she is weeing blood like at the start. Her levels havent changed either with any of the urine tests .

What I really don’t want is a crisis pts in an emergency.

And DD has said goodbye now so I have to think of her as well.

She sounds very unwell and you are doing the right thing by her, something a lot of humans would choose if they could for themselves.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2020 09:19

Sounds like it's time. So sorry.

I am so very sorry.

It's time. We had our lovely old girl put to sleep at home on my DDs bed so she could hold her and kiss her while it happened (DD is bed bound) and when our old dog has to be put to sleep we will do the same. Doing it as an emergency is more stressful in my experience.

Clarich007 · 23/11/2020 09:41

I remember your post from few weeks ago tootyfrutti.
I'm so sorry she and you are going through this. It's so upsetting but you have to put your own feelings aside and think of her.
It's the last act of love you can do for her.
I'm sure you don't want her to suffer any more.
Good luck 💐

Clarich007 · 23/11/2020 09:43

Salihagenter, just go away, how disrespectful I have reported your message

tootyfruitypickle · 23/11/2020 10:19

Thanks everyone. Vet on way😞. Cat has just done the most ginormous fart which reminds me her tummy is not good at all . And no wee since 6am which is v unusual, this happened at start of infection and first alerted me something was wrong .

She’s currently snoring in my arms x

Thinking of you @tootyfruitypickle So hard, but you are doing the right thing for her.

SimbaNala12 · 23/11/2020 10:58

It's such a difficult decision, I really feel for you. My lovely boy Simba was out to sleep 10 days ago, he had agressive lymphoma. It's not an easy decision as we love them so much. Here's the poem that helped me with that decision and a picture of my boy who we miss so much. Best wishes for you @tootyfruitypickle. We do what we feel is for the best. X

Thinking of you tootyfruity.
It's such a difficult thing to do, you always question yourself, but as my vet always says"Better a day too early than a week too late"
I've always found it very peaceful at the end, and it has always helped me to stay with them.

tootyfruitypickle · 23/11/2020 12:04

That poem helped a lot thank you.

She passed more peacefully than I could have ever imagined.

Seeing how little she reacted to the vet or anything that went on has reassured me that I made the right decision. And how quick and painless the experience was for her.

It can't have been easy for you.
It does help when they go peacefully.Take care

Sending love. But it's for the best. I lost my 10 year old cat unexpectedly at home last week. Se was fine then gone. I'm devastated. But one thing I'm thankful for is she didn't suffer. You're totally doing the right thing stopping her suffering now. It's an act of love from you to her.

Sending hugs xx

NeonIcedcoffee · 23/11/2020 12:37

@SimbaNala12 I'm in floods of tears at that poem. So sorry for your loss too. Yiu also did the right thing. I have another cat and always check which one it is when they run in the room. I'm still doing it even though it's only the one now. It's so hard to adjust. I just miss her loads. As I'm sure all those who have lost fur babies do.

Cailleach1 · 23/11/2020 21:14

It is hard to do. It was a kindness though. Especially the calm way it seem to have been done. Just letting her slip away from all her troubles.

Gingerkittykat · 23/11/2020 23:34

I'm sorry for your loss, I hope you can take some peace in knowing you did the right thing.

SimbaNala12 · 24/11/2020 10:24

@tootyfruitypickle thank you. I'm glad the poem helped you too. I'm sorry for your loss too, it's early days for us both and it will take time I guess. X

SimbaNala12 · 24/11/2020 10:28

@NeonIcedcoffee thank you. It's so hard isn't it. I have another cat too, Simba's sister. I also see him when I know he isn't there. Just missing him so much, yes it's so hard to adjust to them not being there. I'm so sorry for your loss too, take care.
