Has my husband developed cat allergy?

Wondering if anyone here might be able to help. DH has convinced himself he's developed an allergy to our cat, on, admittedly, fairly strong grounds but I think he could probably find out more before being so sure. NB, he is also a cat lover, possibly the biggest in a house of them, so he really doesn't want to lose the cat!

He has had very itchy, inflamed skin for about two months now, ie about since we all started being inside more after 5 months of all wfh and it's so bad he can seldom sleep properly. He has spoken to the GP a few times, and tried some different lotions which seemed to help at first but then it came back just as bad. Says the penny dropped after he felt fine all day yesterday, but then suddenly itchy just after cuddling the cat in the late evening.

We've hoovered everything, washing cushion covers (cat overgrooms, so she leaves a lot of dander), he's got some antihistamines, has ordered some food that allegedly lowers allergens from cats and he may try staying elsewhere for a few days to see if something domestic might be causing the issues (which isn't necessarily the cat).

Even if we can make things livable I feel sad if the upshot is that he might not be able to stroke and cuddle her while the rest of us can.

I don't know if anyone has any experience of something like this?
