Cats and candles

Hi I really love candles but I’ve heard that they are not good for cats. Are they all bad or is there a brand that can be used around cats? How about essential oil’s? Or incense sticks? Tia

I always assumed the candle/cat risk was fire related?

thecatneuterer · 31/10/2020 17:45

They set fire to cat's tails. That's why they're bad. I actually saw it happen once (not my house/cats).

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/10/2020 18:02

Animals don’t have the fire sense you think they’d have.

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/10/2020 18:03

No way would I have candles with cats in the house.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 31/10/2020 18:09

We burn yankee or woodwick nearly every night. Always on the top of the fireplace- the cats too stupid to get up there even though he easily could 🤷‍♀️

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 31/10/2020 18:23

I believe essential oils can be poisonous to cats.

hilariousnamehere · 31/10/2020 18:25

After my cat walked over tea light candles and burned her belly fur when she was a kitten, I just use led ones now.

Essential oils can damage cats' livers and some can be fatal so please research properly. I don't use them any more just in case!

My female cat throws things onto the floor , ( two fruitbowls, TV remote, computer mouse , books)

She'd have no qualms about throwing a candle on the floor .

We use the LED flickering fake ones

ladybird69 · 31/10/2020 20:23

I’ve got a hurricane candle holder so she wouldn’t be able to get close to the candle but yes she would probably’play’ with tea lights just on side board as she is daft as a brush. Ragdoll not one brain cell in her head. Thanks for all your advice.

Weve had a few singed whiskers over the years and she still hasn't learnt so I keep them in candle lanterns.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/10/2020 21:16

I always light a candle at night, but it’s on top of the mantelpiece where cat-face never goes. I wouldn’t put one anywhere she could reach.

vanillandhoney · 01/11/2020 07:48

We have three cats and light candles daily. But I'd never leave the cats unattended around them and we always put the candles up on high shelves so they can't jump up.

Oldraver · 01/11/2020 08:03

OH sometimes burns a candle and put in a silly place as he was worried the cat would get at it

I bought an Illumina lid which is slightly domed so the cat can't his paws in

AnnaMagnani · 01/11/2020 09:32

I've had singed whiskers with a cat. And the amount of stuff they knock over - massive fire risk.

Plus the fragrance makes their lives miserable - some are dangerous to them, and even if they are not they are animals that live in a scent world.
