Litter tray recommendations

I've got two cats who we have had for six years. They are now 10 and 7. They are currently house cats. I need to buy a new litter tray as we've got a crack in one of theirs. I've just got three open trays at the moment. I had one with a lid in the past but got rid of it as it was too bulky. Have things moved on in recent years and are there any decent looking, cat friendly options? Litter trays are in the utility (x2) and family bathroom (x1), and I regard them as a necessary evil. Are there any more discreet options that are still very easy for cats to use?

In particular, are ModKat litter boxes worth it? It looks like it would be much cleaner but the price of them is a bit eye watering. Should I just get another cheap tray?

No the ModKat boxes are not worth it. I had a Modkat flip and hated it. It was very bulky and difficult to pick up to empty. The liners are really expensive and difficult to get hold off.
I had a pet mate top entry box, that was brilliant. But cheddar didn't know what to do with it it.
Now have a big standard Wilko covered tray and it's fine.

I’ve got a normal hooded one minus the flap and a corner triangle one with no lid. Happy with both - so the cats say. I did buy a large one from amazon but made the fatal mistake of not measuring the space it would fit..... it’s currently in time out in the shed.

We have probably the opposite of what you're after but I figured if ours were outdoors they'd have more space than a wee tray so we use 2 x under bed storage boxes. It means we can fill them nice and deep and they can have a good scrabble in it and it keeps the smell down as every thing is well buried, apart from the odd time they just like to leave their business sitting on top!

We've got a Modkatt flip and found it to be brilliant! I don't move it often. Its in a corner, the cat loves it. It doesn't smell, its easy to clean and I don't get litter outside the box on the floor as it contains everything. I bought a spare liner when I purchased it, but tbh the liner doesn't get dirty.
I use cats best litter with it and give the liner a scrub every 6 weeks.
