Why does my cat sleep on thresholds?

Anyone have any ideas? He does come on the bed and occasionally a lap but he loves doorways. Like a fluffy guard dog. We do trip over him in the dark sometimes.

Is there a pipe under there by any chance? My cats sit in certain places where it's particularly warm due to the heating pipes!

ApocalypseNowt · 25/10/2020 21:12

Lovely cat btw!

There’s your answer OP Grin

ilovebagpuss · 25/10/2020 21:17

No pipes that I know of but I hadn’t thought of that. He is a sweet boy but sometimes a bit weird Grin

@GenuineKlatchianPottery Grin Yeah he probably finds that hilarious hoping to wake us up so he can have a midnight snack.

Ours do it just inside our bedroom and it is because the central heating pipes are under there.

HeronLanyon · 25/10/2020 21:28

He’s trying to be a draught excluder but hasn’t quite worked it out ! What a lovely cat !

ilovebagpuss · 25/10/2020 21:31

I’ve been and felt the floor no warm pipes he’s always liked doorways. Oh well he’s happy there !

The threshold is slightly higher than the floor, and cats like to sleep on a raised surface.

FingersCrossedForAllOfUs · 25/10/2020 21:34

Beautiful cat. They all have their quirks don’t they. Maybe he’s keeping his options open, finding it difficult to decide which room to sleep in!

MsSquiz · 25/10/2020 21:38

He is gorgeous!
One of mine always has to sleep under things (tables, chairs, freshly ironed & hung up clothes!) and her sister lies on her back at various points in the stair case!

Cats are just weird , and just want to keep us on our toes by doing odd things.
Our cat has about 6 beds we have bought for her over the years, nearly all of them discarded by her as unsuitable.
One has languished for about 5+ years in our spare bedroom propped upon a few boxes of crap piled in the corner . It has happily sat there all that time unloved.
These past few days it has been her favourite spot.

ilovebagpuss · 25/10/2020 21:59

Thanks for the cat love he is an individual for sure. I think it must be a little higher and I think he likes to see all entry/exit points like a fluffy Jason Bourne. He’s moved to protect the other side now. His name is Maximus and I sometimes have to use all of his titles if he’s in bad books.

I have coaxed him onto the Pouffe I always feel sad when he’s squashed on the cold floor.

Oh he is gorgeous.

Mine have never been fond of cold hard floors when there's a warm squishy human you can 'knead'

TW2013 · 25/10/2020 22:29

Maybe because it it there?

ragged · 25/10/2020 22:29

Mine is same (thresholds) & I have no idea why.
Black cat, dark rooms. Argh.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 25/10/2020 22:41

idiot cat quite likes to lie on the floor....his most favourite is a nice damp bath mat...little minger, and he is also a trip hazard

Otherwise ...is that the centre of the house? One of our dogs used to LOVE to lie in the hallway over the sitting room to hall and hall to dining room doors and we worked out that from there he knew everything....front door at the other end of the hall, big window in the dining room to see the back door, he could supervise the sitting room and dining room and hear anyone upstairs. Our other cat likes the corner of the sofa in the dining room which is the next best place for being the All Seeing Eye, now she has had to take over all supervision of us since the dog died.

Ibizafun · 25/10/2020 23:02

I’ve often wondered why my cats do this and I think it’s so they can keep an ear out for all the rooms and know who’s where

ilovebagpuss · 25/10/2020 23:23

I think you are right it’s definitely a centre point to see 3 rooms and down the hall I wonder if he’s feeling nervous about something like another cat getting in. Glad to hear he’s not the only turkey that does this.

My finger blob learned early on, not to be under my feet. It was the 360° twist between my feet that did it. Random parking meant her squawking and me jumping a foot so I have nightlights everywhere and look down.

Gingaaarghpussy · 26/10/2020 00:43

Fuck! *ginger not finger.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/10/2020 07:01

Put a nice fluffy bed there. He won’t go near it then.

lorisparkle · 26/10/2020 07:22

My lovely cat used to love to sleep half way down the second set of our dogleg stairs . One day I was carrying a basket of washing down the steps, felt something warm and fluffy under my foot so not wanting to hurt him I tried to step down two stairs, slipped and landed hard on my bottom. I seriously thought I had broken something. The cat on the other hand had not moved!

He just loves to lie in the middle off wherever people are walking (and never moves!)

KiposWonderbeasts · 26/10/2020 07:27

We’ve got a threshold cat too.
