My kitten doesn’t hiss

He doesn’t yowl angrily or anything either. Is this normal? He’s 14 weeks, been with us 5 weeks and he has never hissed. He has a very loud purr and miaow. He’s generally a placid cat, only bites and scratches when he gets carried away playing, never in anger. But shouldn’t cats hiss sometimes?!

They do it when they feel threatened so your doing a good job if he hasn’t felt the need.

LaughingDonkey · 01/10/2020 19:32

The first time I heard my lady cat hiss was when she was 2.5 years old. At new kitten we just brought home.

The boy (aforementioned new kitten) has hissed once or twice when he was about 2 years old after stressful house move from one town to another.

BTW both are good friends now :)

I've never heard our boy cat hiss. His sister is constantly hissing - at him, but he has never felt the need. And she never mieowed until after the first time she went to the cattery - she was silent on the way there and screamed the entire way home Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/10/2020 19:39

My MP told me that kittens only hiss if they have a puncture.

MushMonster · 01/10/2020 19:43

No hissing is a good sign. I ha0ve never heard of anyone wanting their cat to hiss!
I had cats that I never ever heard hissing.
He is happy and feels secure, so no need to hiss.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/10/2020 20:15

Perhaps should have added if you wanted something to hiss perhaps you should have got a snake or one of the coffee machines from Starbucks (only joking - have already been accused of being juvenile once today...) Wink

I don’t actively want him to hiss Grin. I was worried he hadn’t learnt how to (the vet thinks he was only 7 weeks when he left his mother, he came to us a few weeks later). He seems happy, but we do have a 3 year old so I wondered how he could possibly be this calm! He’s currently snuggled on my lap, being adorable.

I've had cheddar two years. She has never ever hissed, scratched or bitten. She's so chilled. Apparently she was bullied by another cat in her previous home. I can see why. She's 8

Wolfiefan · 01/10/2020 22:00

I have torties who hiss. Trust me it’s a good thing if your cat doesn’t/isn’t a psycho puss. Grin

TheVanguardSix · 01/10/2020 22:04

He'll hiss when he needs to. Obviously, in the safety and serenity of his loving home, he doesn't need to. Smile
He's not a black and white/tuxedo cat, is he?

madcatladyforever · 01/10/2020 22:05

Buns has been a lifelong hisser. Sometimes I wonder if she is possessed. A bit of fluff on the carpet, a cat outside the window, not liking her food, being woken up.
She was feral and doesn't let me forget it 19 years later.
She's a cutie though.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/10/2020 22:08

Mine doesn't purr. Rather she does but doesn't make a sound - you can feel her vibrate. She rarely meows either - but she can hiss like a banshee at the dog is he dares sleep in her spot

When my ginger boy was a kitten he used to hiss and spit at us through the banisters when we went up the stairs Grin

He grew out of it pretty quickly and I haven't heard him do it since, he's the most laid back cat ever.

AnnaMagnani · 01/10/2020 22:14

Try standing on him or shutting a door on him.

No seriously don't do those things but my cats only hiss when we have seriously upset them by accidents like the above or they have gone outside and had fall outs with next door's cats.

If you have only had yours for 5 weeks and managed not to upset him, that's lovely.

Also if doesn't shout at you, enjoy the peace and quiet. Silky cat arrived and decided she would announce her presence every 5 minutes. She is very loud and never shuts the fuck up. It's nice when she's asleep Wink

Qwenzo · 01/10/2020 22:17

Try shutting his tail in the window! My poor boy hissed multiple times when I did that!

TroysMammy · 02/10/2020 07:24

I had Haribo when he was 9 weeks old. He's never hissed, hardly meows and is tight with his purrs. He's never clawed in play but he went through a phase once when I would turf him out of the bathroom because I didn't want him causing damage to my plants or himself and he would really go for my legs. That phase has passed thankfully.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/10/2020 09:27

My cats only ever hiss at a random intruder cat in their garden ( they have microchip access so no other cats in the house)

Female cat does a brief "miaow" when her food is being prepared .

AyDeeAitchDee · 02/10/2020 09:29

Never heard my girl hiss until she was 3 and we brought our boy home who was a kitten at the time.

She then hiss at him every day for the rest of her life.

Only heard him hiss maybe 5 times total. The few times he's seen a dog.

Misty999 · 02/10/2020 09:39

My boy is 5 and never ever hissed, my girl though is another matter hisses if you look at her the wrong way.

Echobelly · 02/10/2020 09:40

My cat is 9 years old, I've only ever heard her hiss twice - when taken to the vet!

Oldraver · 02/10/2020 10:03

I've heard Colin hiss once or twice mainly as he had something of so important he didn't want to give up
