Litter tray stinks!!!

We have one old cat using litter tray and I absolutely stinks. I end up emptying all the litter out every other day and disinfecting / washing it and putting in clean litter. I use catsuit. DC is taking medication for his kidneys and does pee a lot. What can I do to reduce amount of litter i am using and number of times cleaning it out?

I would put a puppy pad thing in bottom and sprinkle less litter on to reduce the amount.
Or have you tried the crystal ones which absorb the wee. We used to buy from wilko and it is meant to not need changing for a week.

I use wood pellets and change every day. Doesn’t smell. The wood smells like pine. But I clean and refresh daily. No way I’d have it go longer.

I use wood pellets, which are really good for reducing the smell. I clear out all poo and wee a couple of times a day and occasionally top up the pellets, then do a complete change every 2 weeks (to fit in with general rubbish collection in my road).

Only twice have I had to do a complete change in the middle of the fortnight, and both times it was due to not keeping up with the pee and poo removal due to illness on my part.

Try Sanicat Oxygen Power Clumping Litter or Golden White.

I have 2 cats and find I just need to scoop daily, top up if required and change completely once a month.

No smells and the litter lasts for ages - cheaper in the long run.

catsan (if that's what you mean) does go smelly really quickly. Could you try a clumping litter instead and then you can remove pee and poo so it takes longer to get stinky

To add to my comment about my recommendations...

These litters are made to be used in the way that I do ie not changed daily/weekly.

Is DC on the kidney diet? Because I found 100% less stink as soon as my cat went on it. Less pee too. I get mine from zooplus.

Clumping litter is my preference too. Less to go smelly as you are removing pee and poo

I agree with dementedpixie. My dad was looking after my cats when I was on holiday and bought some catsan to use. There was still some left when I came back to continued to use it and I couldn't believe how quickly it stunk! It looks nice and pristine white in the tray though.

I always use the cheapest non clumping supermarket brand and find that the best.

Natures best cats stuff- paper/wood based smells the least.

Try wood pellets and the Brit sieve litter tray
