Our 5 month old kitten is dying

Just wanted to raise aware of this. Our pure bred kitten came from a breeder (shelters closed in lockdown). He has been diagnosed with a fatal virus called FIP. A coronavirus which lots of cats carry but vary rarely develops into this illness.

I didn’t like the conditions the cats were housed in at the breeder when we collected him.. but have no idea if they are to blame or not.
Either way we are heartbroken, is is a beautiful soul.

@Ibizafun

Thanks!! The treatment is £3500 excluding vets fees to inject the vials before he goes onto the pills but apparently Petplan pay out for this, we’re hoping anyway!
Good grief! I hope they do, but I’m sorry to say they may refuse on the grounds it’s an unlicensed drug. I hope I’m completely wrong, but you know what insurance companies are like. I’m delighted your kitty seems to be recovering.

Photo please.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you & your brave little boy. So glad to hear he's eating & looking better. Great signs!! And how wonderful there's a new treatment 😁

Ibizafun · 11/09/2020 23:12

Thanks again for your lovely wishes. Unfortunately this afternoon he seems to have e regressed a bit, I’m hoping it’s just a bad day and that he’ll be brighter in the morning. I will post a photo when he’s please g-d better x

Keep going, don’t give up. I wasn’t joking about the multi vit for cats, basic nursing works on animals. There will be one available probably marketed to old age cats.

Plenty of sleep, good quality food & fluids, warm cozy places to sleep. You can put a fleece over him when he sleeps.

Plussizejumpsuit · 12/09/2020 06:33

This is so sad. But at least the kitten has a loving home for his last days. Unfortunately I think this type of thing is not uncommon and as pp have said breeders conditions can mean all sorts of things circulate. I'd be very surprised if it didn't come from the breeder. Unfortunately even if yoh only adopt or buy from a reputable breeder next time there will be somone queuing up behind you to buy a kitten from this dodgy breeder. I don't know what the answer is?licences maybe.

But so sorry to hear and you couldn't have known. Sending love xxFlowers

There’s a few here, some are designed for cats who are under duress like your boy.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/09/2020 09:31

That's great news, I'm so pleased. I've been following the story of Brie on the Stray Cat Rescue West Midlands FB page. She's currently on day 50 of observation and is doing really well.

Please let us know how your boy gets on.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/09/2020 09:33

Oh no, I'm so sorry. I didn't see your update before I posted, I didn't realise my iPad was open from last nigh. Fingers crossed it's a blip and he picks up again Flowers

Ibizafun · 12/09/2020 22:57

Thanks so much FluffyCloud, he is on Vit B12 and another supplement to support his liver, but I will also look at a multi vitamin.

Thanks PinkSparkley, he was much brighter today, racing after his sister again and playing. Does Brie have FIP? My vet told me a lot of it is down to genetics and some cats are more prone to develop it.

Plussizejumpsuit We are desperately trying to get him back to health and he’s doing really well, the daily trips to the vet for his jabs are stressing him out though, if I wasn’t so pathetic I’d inject him myself.

I hope he continues to recover. x

CausingChaos2 · 12/09/2020 23:08

Amazing that you’ve seen an improvement - well done you for doing your research and saving his life. I hope he continues to improve and can get on with being a kitten Smile

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/09/2020 09:30

@Ibizafun I'm glad he had a better day yesterday.

Yes, Brie has FIP. She's had 84 days of Mutian and is now doing well in the observation stage. I don't know if you're on FB but Stray Cat Rescue West Midlands post regular updates about Brie and her sister Swiss (who doesn't have FIP).

Ibizafun · 13/09/2020 10:15

PinkSparkley I’m going to look on Facebook. I thought Mutian is an 80 day course though? Am wondering if is there any chance of a relapse and how long life expectancy is, as our kitten was in the latter stage of the disease. Sorry for all the questions!

Thank you CausingChaos and Cokey x

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/09/2020 10:19

Sorry, I may be wrong with the 84 day bit. They don't know if there's a chance of a relapse or Brie's life expectancy as this is so new. She was quite advanced but there is lovely footage of her running around and playing with her sister.

GADDay · 13/09/2020 10:25

We had the exact same thing. The vet said FIP. Within 5 days 100% better.

Has your kitten been vaccinated recently?

Ibizafun · 13/09/2020 21:15

GADday did you give your cat Mutian and did your vet say how advanced the FIP was? Our kitten was vaccinated just before we got him.

PinkSparkly loving the story about Brie

Is he ok?.

imissthesouth · 15/09/2020 21:15

I hope so, sending my love @Ibizafun

Ibizafun · 15/09/2020 21:59

Thanks Fluffycloud and imissthesouthFlowers he’s getting stronger every day but so very very skinny, doing my best to put some meat on him but will take time x

Glad to hear he's on the mend, fingers crossed 🤞🏻Thanks

SpongeBoobBigPants · 23/09/2020 14:16

Hi OP, just wondering how your lovely boy is doing? I lost my 11 month old kitten to effusive FIP earlier this year and have been thinking of you every day and hoping he pulls through.
