Kitten constipated

Our lovely boy kitten came home on Friday and settled in great. He was initially pooing fine, albeit not in the litter tray but he’s only 9 weeks so we expected accidents!

After researching we decided to put him on a raw diet and used Natural Instinct pre made food. It’s the type specifically aimed at kittens. Since then his poos were considerably harder and the last poo had a small amount of blood on, which is I’m assuming due to straining. I’m not really happy with this so put him back on the same wet food he’d been on at his first home.

So he had a very hard, dry poo this morning but nothing since and he has been repeatedly trying. Is there anything I can do to help him? He’s been peeing fine and still eating. Does he need to see a vet tonight or should I give him a bit more time?

For my cats (1 year old so not kittens) I put water on their wet food so they are well hydrated, and sprinkle a tiny pinch of psyllium husk powder on their food, once or twice a day. It is like fybogel.

Take him to the e vets. Our old cat has severe constipation issues. You'll want to get this sorted before he associates his litter box with pain. You'll get suggestions of canned pumpkin etc but in my experience none of that worked. He might be too little for a micro enema but the vet might be able to do something to get things moving.

We did end up taking him to be seen tonight and he’s been given a laxative and some special food for the next few days. He’s currently snuggled up on my knee so definitely comfortable! Hoping for poo over the next 24 hours!

Hopefully your vet can suggest a few things to help but when my cat got constipated we were advised to steer clear of dry food and ensure the wet food is grain free (Sainsbury's do a range). Hopefully your kitten is better soon.
