Which is the best litter?

Within reason I'm prepared to chuck money at the problem!

ChampagneCat has been with us 6 weeks now and so far we've been using the wood pellet litter - it's what I've used previously, what she had used in the rescue and we can also chuck it on the log burner when it's used.

However I have never known a cat make such a production over the litter tray and despite regular daily cleaning there's a certain whiff about the place (I'm hopeful the weather has played a part so far)

Ideally she won't go out until the springtime, and we are hoping to keep her in at night so we will need a litter tray for a long time. It would just be better if it didn't smell so bad

Have you got a covered litter tray or an open one?
I rarely have any smell from the pettex one. I scoop the solids & sieve & top up the litter( washing the tray each time ) at least twice a week.

How old is she? We used to use Sainsbury's clumping but they changed the formula, we now use Catsan Natural and have been very impressed. We have 4 cats and it's very good at odour control. Having said that clumping litter should not be used with kittens.

Catsan is the best IMO. I use the pack with the liner included and it doesn’t smell.

She's about 3 so no issues with clumping litter.

The tray has high sides but not completely covered so that's worth bearing in mind. I just looked at CatSan in the feed merchants but held off as it was a lot more expensive. If it's recommended though I will give it a whirl.

Wilko do a crystal one that is incredible but only comes in small bags.

Catsan non-clumping. We've used it since our kitten turned about 14 weeks (16 weeks is advisable).

I found catsan original (white) got smelly quickly. I like clumping litter as you can remove pee and poo. I just have basic clay clumping stuff as mine don't use the tray much now. In the past I used eco clumping stuff like Worlds Best and Oko Plus Smart Pellets

I don't currently have cats but when I did I tried every litter under the sun. Really I found the best way, regardless of litter, is just to use a very small amount of litter and just change the whole lot as soon as there is a pee in it. If there was just a poo, I would scoop it out and leave it until there was a pee, but in my experience as soon as there's a pee there, there's going to be a smell.

And if you use a covered tray to contain the smell, you might find that your cat starts toileting outside the box as the smell will be contained within the litter tray and they don't like that.

Also, once your cat goes out during the day, depending on how long they are kept in for at night they may get in the habit of doing their business outside before bed and then not going again until they go out again in the morning. A lot of mine did that; they would come in for the night around 11pm and would open the doors again in the morning at around 7am.

As regards actual litter, I would second the recommendation for catsan - just a small amount, full change when pee'd in.

I change the litter pretty much every day because the wee smells. Its just such a strange dilemma, our old cat would only use a litter tray in a dire emergency. This one causes such utter desecration in moments

Catsan non clumping

I use Tigerino Nuggies from Zooplus, having tried several others. Its really good at masking odours. My 8kg boy does huuuuuge wees and there's very little smell and its easy to lift out the clumps. I top up regularly and do a full change every fortnight on bin day.

My boy only goes in the litter trays, so it's in constant use. He's happy with it and it's the only one I use now.

My lad refused point blank to put his paws (let alone his butt) in the World's Best.

We use Pets @ Home Antibacterial or Ultra Clumping.

I would recommend the Catsan biodegradable one. I used regular Catsan for years and it was fine, but as my cat has got older it doesn't seem to control wee odours. It's almost like fine grains of sand, and does clump well. Only downside is it does get between the paws and he leaves a trail

Another vote for World's Best

I have had cats for years and years and years. I currently have 3 and recently changed to paper pallets. I can honestly say they've changed the litter tray part of my life. Granted 2 of mine don't use it very often because they go out, but it is so much easier to clean and it it brilliant at masking the smell.

We've recently bought some vancat clumping cat litter and it's been a revelation! I'm probably going to look for a flushable, clumping litter next though as I'd like to be eco friendly!

I was using World's Best but now use chicken crumb feed. It is the same as World's Best except the pieces are smaller and so get dispersed a bit more. However, it is a quarter of the price of World's Best so worth the extra sweeping up!
