Help with kittens!

We have just got two 11 week old kittens. They’ve been raised on fresh chicken, which I can’t keep giving them. I’ve bought them Iams wet food and Purina dry food (for kittens). One will eat anything but the other will barely eat and I keep giving her the remains of the roast chicken we had but it’s nearly run out.

What do I do?? It’s been about 12 years since I last had a kitten and she just ate whatever I gave her. Kitten pic in exchange for info 😻😻

Keep persevering with kitten food Royal Canin do some too and heat by a wee drop warm water mashed in to it. The smell might peak an interest

Itsjustabitofbanter · 25/08/2020 16:20

I’d stop feeding her chicken. It’s going to be a case of putting your foot down until she’s hungry enough to eat normal food

Ursula4007 · 25/08/2020 18:09

I’ve been there. Start by putting a tiny amount of cat food on a plate with the chicken, then slowly reducing the amount of chicken so there is only cat food. Or even better, try tuna (all cats love tuna!) and a fishy cat food.

Madcats · 25/08/2020 19:02

Can you get hold of some dehydrated meat/fish cat treats Thrive and "Pet Munchies" are two brands my two devour. They were daft enough not to notice if I crushed it and sprinkled it over pouch/tinned kitten food.

Madcats · 25/08/2020 19:02

PS the kitten looks beautiful!

Papergirl1968 · 25/08/2020 19:21

Aww, they are beautiful. Is that Miss Fussy at the front?
We had a Siamese once who flatly refused to touch cat food, and used to try to scratch it over like it offended him. He was an undersized little thing and I really think he’d have starved himself rather than eat it.
The little prince was fed on the best steak, chicken, fish, the occasional bit of ham etc. My parents were very traditional when it came to food and whatever we had, the cat did too...

Mix lots of chicken in with very little cat food gradually increasing the ratio of cat food to chicken.

EachandEveryone · 25/08/2020 23:03

You can get catfood that just is shredded chicken with all the necessary taurine added. Sainsburys do their own and its good.

soddingkitten · 26/08/2020 07:34

EachandEveryone What is that Sainsburys food called? I have created my own fussy monster, so need a more appealing option.

EachandEveryone · 26/08/2020 11:11

www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/luxury-cat-food/sainsburys-tdc-chicken-collection-6x85g have you got them on dry as well? They do Encore dry there as well which mine like its not cheap but you dont need much. Its also on special offEr in Morrissons.

MumtherofCats · 26/08/2020 11:36

I would try a high quality wet food that is made primarily from real chicken. As others have said, start with some chicken in the bowl with a bit of the food mixed in with it. Gradually increase the amount of wet food as she will tolerate with each meal. I would start with thrive complete chicken breast -- it looks and smells very similar to cooked shredded chicken breast. You can order online from zooplus. It is a complete food, so will provide everything she needs in her diet but once she's eating that then I'd start trying to branch out to some other high quality wet foods. Good luck!

EachandEveryone · 26/08/2020 11:52

Its just the same as the link i share but the Sainsburys one is half the price. The reviews are excellent as well.

Try her with thrive kitten, the Sainsbury’s delicious recipes is for adult cats. The only problem is thrive is expensive..

I’ve a pampered princess, she will only eat fish cat food with high fish content (thrive, hi life and the expensive Sainsbury’s one), she loves fresh prawns, chicken and ham and will not entertain cat biscuits or any of the cheaper cat food. She costs me a fortune...

bythehairsonmychinichinchin · 26/08/2020 12:00

Oh and my cat was fed cooked chicken as a kitten, it took me ages to get her to eat other things....

soddingkitten · 26/08/2020 21:30

If my kitten prince is eating a mix of dry and wet food and the dry food is fortified kitten kibble, can we just give him mince, sardines in oil & similar? Canned sardines and basic mince are a fraction of the price of fancy pants cat food and much higher in meat/fish protein and content than his kitten pouches.

Ibizafun · 26/08/2020 21:43

I would highly recommend Thrive chicken. It’s pure high quality chicken. My kittens love it.

samlh · 27/08/2020 16:02

Mine has Blink pouches. They are 50% chicken and then 50% other meat (turkey, duck, beef etc) and they have started doing Tuna and Tuna/Salmon.

HRH won't touch dry food (we have tried too many to list) but he is happy enough on Blink :)
