Have I wasted even more money?

Harry isn't eating as much in the hot weather and I'm fed up with having to throw his food away because flies have been on it. We tried covering it up when he walks away but he then looks suspiciously at us and won't eat it. I've had the 'bright' idea of buying a motion sensitive pet bowl...

I've wasted my money haven't I?

What does it do?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/08/2020 20:39

It opens when he approaches and closes when he's finished and walks away. Luckily it's silent so it shouldn't make him jump!

We have one as we get loads of flies in summer, if it broke I would definitely buy another. It helps stop the food from drying out and keeps it fresher.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/08/2020 20:42

How did you get your cat used to the feeder? Harry will eat from it when it's open but can't seem to get the hang of walking up to it.

I've been using one for my cat for the last 3 years, it's fabulous, and he learned very quickly.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/08/2020 20:48

I've just ordered mine a fountain as my parents cat loves his. Hopefully mine will use it too.

HardAsSnails · 11/08/2020 20:49

Are you using it on training mode?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/08/2020 20:59

Isn't it always open on training mode? I can't have uncovered food in this heat as the flies are all over it.

To be fair to Harry it only arrived yesterday and I think he's eating less because of the heat.

@Toddlerteaplease I bought Harry a fountain. He refused to go in the kitchen when it was on!

We just put some treats in there while they were watching.

Thinking back I don't think I ever used training mode, just kept putting the cat in front of it and eventually he got the knack.

Maybe balance a Dreamie or something on the front sensor edge?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/08/2020 21:06

I keep picking him up and putting him in front of it. He's not frightened of it which is something and is quite happy to eat from the bowl providing it's opened for him.

That's a good idea about putting a treat on it. If I balance one of his stinky fish treats he'll at least know where it is, you can't miss the smell!

Near idea. Is it fairly heavy as my old girl will flick her pottery bowl on the floor if I’m not quick enough to feed her.
This could solve that issue.....

liquoricecravings · 11/08/2020 23:19

We have the microchip version of this bowl as we have two cats and it stops them from stealing each others' food. We bought them a year ago and I still love them.

We put it on training mode for a week or so. Our girl cat was more suspicious about it so took a few more days to get the hang of it.

The training mode guide is on the surefeed website. We have their microchip cat flap too (it helps that DH likes a gadget too).

I needn't have worried, Harry has it sussed! He now walks up to the feeder and eats as soon as it opens. This is a lot better than having to take his food up as every time I put it back down again he was looking at it suspiciously

That's great, it's amazed me how good the seal is and how well the food stays fresh.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2020 18:06

The fountain seems to be a success! Snorg has t noticed it yet though. But cheddar had a really good drink

runwithme · 14/08/2020 18:12

I love the idea of this! Does it automatically close when they are done, as my cats are grazers

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2020 18:19

Snorg has also had a good drink. I'm Amazed how quickly they've taken too it!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/08/2020 18:41

What fountain did you get? Can Snorg explain to Harry how easy it is?

@runwithme the feeder is brilliant. It opens when he goes up to it and closes when he walks away. I was worried he didn't seem to be eating as much (he normally has 2 pouches and 2 small bowls of biscuits a day) but then I realised he was actually eating all the wet food as it was still fresh.

It's a Umitraz one from Amazon. My parents have one for their boy and he adores it.
Snorg says it's really easy and nothing to be scared of!
