Kitten grooming

I have been brushing our kitten every other night but do I need to give him a bath? I’ve cleaned his teeth twice in 6 weeks how often should I be doing this? I’ve done some research but the advice is conflicting.

No they dont need a bath. I've never brushed my cats teeth

RedKittyCat · 08/08/2020 22:36

Thanks I asked two different cat owners and one baths and brushes weekly the other never had.

I've only bathed my cat once and that because he was caked in mud. The bathroom got covered in mud and I got covered in scratches

RedKittyCat · 08/08/2020 22:41

Kitten is not keen on water so I’m glad regular baths are not necessary. Friend who washes her cat says he loves it!

What breed is the cat? My ragdolls get groomed once a week and my norwegian forest kitten needs his ruff combed every day and full coat twice a week. I don't bath the ragdolls often maybe twice a year but will need to bath kitten more often because he is white.

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 17:27

Siamese. Doesn’t shed but purrs his heart out when brushed so I oblige Grin. Not so keen on teeth being cleaned but let’s me do it.

If he's enjoying it that's fine but siamese cats are shorthaired so it's not necessary. I wish my kitten would enjoy it he just bites the brush. His coat is going to be pretty impressive when he is grown so he needs to accept it Grin.

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 18:29

I’ve seen photos of your beauty I reckon he is going to be pretty impressive all round. Quite a bit of hair comes out on the brush so I figure it does no harm in this heat but good to know if I skipped a session all is well.

A short haired cat wont need a bath unless they are really grubby and love water. Our oriental girl lived the zoom groom and loads of fur came off. I was told orientals and siamese do suffer with dental problems as they gave smaller mouths but I dont know if that means they need cleaning but if he lets you maybe its a good idea. Can we see a photo.

Ooh yes a photo please. @RedKittyCat thank you he is a beautiful cat. His dad is a champion and all white like him.

OohKittens · 09/08/2020 19:04

He is lovely! Is he very vocal? Falkor doesn't cry he just makes trilling and chirping noises.

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 19:14

Extremely vocal, which is just what we hoped for. Our first cat and I’m so pleased we took the plunge.

I have 2 Siamese. Yours is a beauty by the way! They don't need bathing ever unless they ended up in something they shouldn't. They do need teeth cleaning/ checking fairy regularly as the breed is known for dental problems. Some insurance does cover dental and some doesn't. Petplan only cover it if you have had a dental check at vets in last 12 months before claim. Congratulations on your new baby 🤎

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 19:37

Thanks @CheshireCats our insurance is similar. We were in touch with the breeder for over 18 months before getting him. DH had to practice with neighbours cats to make sure he wasn’t allergic and so far so good. We have had him 6 weeks and absolutely love him. Are your siamese indoor cats?

OohKittens · 09/08/2020 19:46

My ragdolls are indoor one does walk on the lead extremely well and I'm going to start training the kitten soon.

GoldenPlatitudes · 09/08/2020 19:52

My 11 week old kitten has just started to learn to groom himself properly - was nearly at the stage of giving him a bath, stinky wee thing.

One of my older cats pins him down periodically and gives him a good wash 😁

Zzz1234 · 09/08/2020 19:53

Cute kitty
My short hair cat hardly ever gets groomed, had only ever had one bath and hated it
My long hair (white) cat has lots of grooms-weekly-he's quite happy to be brushed, rolled over etc, he has a bath whenever he's not white and quite likes it (it could be cause he's had so many)

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 19:56

@OohKittens. I think our kittens are similar age. Mine is indoors too with a harness. The neighbours’ cats are very interested. The Bengal stuck its head in the open window to get a better look. This was the bedroom window of our house Shock

Washing them is not a problem. It's hanging them on the line and then ironing that has caused all the issues in our house.

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 20:00

@Zzz1234. I think it’s coming down to if the cat likes it bath it if not don’t unless he smells or is covered in mud.

@GoldenPlatitudes love the image of kitten being pinned for a clean by wiser cat.

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 20:01

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat. Just don’t leave them on line over night.

Mine was born on the 6th April. He still has a slight grey patch on his head which will go usually by a year old. When was yours born @RedKittyCat

@RedKittyCat I don't think our white one had a choice- I think he just got used to it

RedKittyCat · 09/08/2020 20:16

27 March so a week apart.

Yes I think much of what you do in the early days they get used to. I can see habits forming already.
