New kittens and loose stools

Hey all.

We got our new fur babies last night and we had to get a different brand food to what they were weaned on.

This afternoon one of them has pretty loose stools and sometimes brings up a bit of bile. Maybe and hour and a half or so after eating.

Would the change of beans cause this? She's got her health check next week as that's the soonest they could get her booked in.

Yes or she could have worms or be stressed. You only have the breeders word that they weren’t ill before you got them.

What food did they have before?.

Sounds like a change of diet and stress all in one... of the loose stools continue tomorrow you may need to get an on the day appointment as kittens dehydrate quickly. Not trying to scare you- the vet can fix dehydration pretty easily xx

Thank you. I spoke to the vets today and they said it's probably change in food as at this age their stomachs are super sensitive (was on Iams but now on whiskers)

I'll keep an eye on it and they've said if it gets worse or doesn't stop in the next day or two (and as long as she's happy and playing etc) then bring her in to check.

She's drinking lots of water but I've just noticed she's only eating the jelly from her wet food and not the little chunks.

Whiskas isn’t great quality that’s why she’s leaving the chunks.

What would you recommend as a kitten wet food please?

I've called the vet so many times today I'll become that patient if I call again!

Well it’s 10 years since I had a kitten but I fed mine on Sainsburys own brand and he was healthy on that. We started off on whiskas, it’s a brand so you think your doing the right thing 🤷🏻‍♀️ Don’t you?.

I never rated Tesco own brand. Aldi used to be brilliant but about 5 years ago it went downhill.

Thank you for the info. I don't want to chop and change too much as they were on Iams previously but I'm finding it hard to get hold of. Maybe I'll give Felix a go (Tesco is our local supermarket!)

Whiskas is awful quality. I would as the vet for a recommendation. Wet food which is grain free is best. Lily's Kitchen, James Wellbeloved etc. Ask Pets at Home for their recommendations as well.

You’ll notice in the pet food aisles the dog owners walk up to the dogs favourite brand, dump a huge sack into the trolley and walk off.

The cat owners walk up, carefully look at all the brands, sift through till they find something acceptable, check the protein levels because at 7.5% they’ll be too hungry but at 12.5% they’ll wolf it down, check the flavours for any no-no’s like dual flavours “ham & chicken” or fish because cat is not a fish cat at all then buy a tiny amount for just one week in case this is the week the cat decides it hates that flavour.

If they do decide they hate that flavour you start again mid-week.

Zooplus is good for different varieties of grain free kitten food. Are you giving wet and dry?

@dementedpixie yes, we've been giving her a mix of both but she definitely prefers the wet food.

Aw! Gorgeous kitties!

This happened with my new kitten last month - turned out it was worms. He was fine 24 hours after being wormed.

They’re gorgeous! I wish we’d got two but I had to talk pretty fast to DH to get one! We abreast have two adult cars and he reckons more than three is crazy cat lady territory.

I'll bet worms is giving the diarrhoea.
I second Zooplus: narrow the search down to 'grain free', 'high protein' and complete when trawling through the kitten food.
I switched mine to an assortment of Bonzita, Wild (something or other, I can't remember the name - all meat, gizzards neck etc and no extras) tinned food, another tinned food brand that is also 95% human grade meat, and a complete food kibble.
Zooplus do cashback on Quidco,deliver within 2 days on large orders and do case prices on many things. The above worked out very economically and since the switch from Purina Sensitive (lol) my kits have the proper hard little long nugget poos that aren't half as offensive to the nose as before.
Whiskers is rubbish. Like McDonald's for cats.

Would the vets be able to check for worms? The breeder said they'd been wormed at 8 weeks (3 days before we took them home)

Poor little thing! I'm concerned now.

I'll definitely check out that page for cat food. I'd love to give them the best start in life and we all love our food in this house so only right the kittens get the same!
