Fleas & Cat Behaviour

We’ve recently noticed fleas (ick) in the house in the last week. Mostly on the carpet, we’ve deflead our cat and I’ve brushed him through and found none (but plenty of flea dirt left). I’m hoovering twice daily and waiting for the Indorex I’ve ordered to arrive so we can attack the carpet! We’re not noticing too many now we’ve started hoovering and no new flea bites on the humans in our house in the last few days so I think it’s not too bad (I do understand about the larvae and we are definitely still going to chemically treat).

Our cats behaviour has really changed, and I’m a bit worried! He’s six and has always been a really affectionate boy, hangs around the kids, sleeps on the sofa or our bed etc. In the last week he’s been outside all the time, regardless of the weather. He hasn’t found another home, he’s sleeping in the bush or on the bins outside our house! He comes in for food and will run across the carpet to get to a hard floor. When he’s in the sitting room where we have the carpet he’ll only sit on wooden furniture! I’m pretty sure he’s now associating the carpet with the fleas. He’s still affectionate with us, just only in rooms with hard floors!

I’ve put a blanket down in the dining room (which has hard floors) and he seem to like that today, hoping we can ease him back into the sitting room when we’ve used a chemical treatment. Has anyone else had this? It’s really odd and we’re all feeling a bit sad that our gorgeous boy would rather sit on a bin than be in our house!!

He’s not off his food at all, or I’d take him to the vets. I don’t think he’s poorly, but if anyone has any advice or reassurance I’d appreciate any words of wisdom!

Is he associating the carpet with the vacuum cleaner rather than the fleas?
