Poorly Harry

On Sunday Harry came in with a nasty scratch right next to his eye. Other than that he was fine. We took him to the vet on Monday who said he was fine apart from carrying some extra weight (cheeky sod!) and sent us away with some eye drops. We got home and Harry was fine, really alert and wanting to finish his breakfast.

An hour later we gave him the first dose of drops and he became lethargic, didn't want to eat and spent the day curled up in the garden. We thought maybe it was just going to the vet catching up with him but didn't give him any more drops that night. He was brighter yesterday morning so we gave him another dose and the same thing happened so we decided to stop the drops and I let the vet know and they didn't seem worried.

Harry was sick in the night and also has a dodgy tummy but seems a bit brighter today. He's eaten some biscuits but not all in the bowl and has moved around more. We've got a vet appointment tomorrow and they've said to cancel if he's better so fingers crossed.

Could the eye drops have caused this? Nothing else has changed and he was fine until he had them so I don't know what else it could be.

Sorry that's so long, I wanted to put everything in the post!

Here's a picture of him resting in the garden this afternoon.

Poor Harry. What was in the eye drops?

Wolfiefan · 22/07/2020 19:16

I don’t know what it is but I do hope he feels better soon. Could he have eaten anything he shouldn’t? Definitely no other wounds?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/07/2020 19:29

The eye drops were isathal (fucithamic) eye ointment.

I don't think he's eaten anything he shouldn't, he doesn't catch much (2 mice in 12 years) and the garden is cat proofed and we're careful about what we have in the garden. There's no other wounds that we can see (or the vet on Monday) so hopefully it's just one of those things.

I've just caught him getting in the cupboard under the stairs to have a nose round so hopefully he's feeling a bit better!

Poor boy. I’d just do salt water swabs if the drops affect him.

Bargebill19 · 22/07/2020 20:48

Has he washed himself and ingested some of the eye drops? Hence why he feels better when not taking them??

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/07/2020 20:53

The scratch has healed quite well but we're keeping a check on it and we'll use saltwater if we need to.

That's what we're wondering @Bargebill19. He washes his face a lot so it could be possible. He is quite accident prone so nothing would surprise me!

Get well soon, Harry!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/07/2020 22:25

Get well soon Harry. I thought that Snorgs atropine eye drops had upset her. As her behaviour was very strange. But apparently it was the pain killers. They'd given her. Did they give him anything else. But it is possible he's allergic to the drops. Have you looked at the side effects in the leaflet?

Bargebill19 · 23/07/2020 13:21

How is Harry? Happy in the sunshine I hope.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/07/2020 15:14

He’s still a bit off his food but is eating more. We took him to the vet this morning and I’ve never seen him so lively! The vet said he’s fine and we came away with some paste for his upset stomach and some Hills prescription food. We’ve not given it to him yet as when we got home he went straight to the kitchen and ate his biscuits!

The nurse he saw today was the one who looked after him when he had all his jaw problems. She saw his name on the system and came out to see if it was definitely him and then went off to make a fuss of him!

That’s good news!! Thanks for the update.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/07/2020 15:49

Because it was only a small bowl of biscuits to try and tempt him this morning I gave him some more and there's not many of those left now either! He's now laying in the garden. Fingers crossed he's on the mend.

The vet doesn't think the drops could cause an issue, but I do wonder if he did ingest some. I checked the leaflet @Toddlerteaplease and it only says consult your vet if there's any side effects! The drops mustn't be used in rabbits intended for human consumption though so they don't sound too pleasant.
